A suspect is in custody. The sheriff’s office said the suspect led officers on a chase to Elk Grove that ended in a shooting.

Elk Grove Police said the suspect crashed into a car on Bruceville Road, between Sheldon Road and Big Horn Boulevard, and officers then approached the vehicle. According to police, three officers opened fire.

An investigation into why they fired their guns is currently underway. Police said a gun was found in the car, however.

The suspect was reportedly shot at least once and is in stable condition at the hospital; no officers were injured.

Officials identified the suspect as 22-year-old Devian Lewis.

The Elk Grove Police will be handling the shooting investigation as it happened within their city limits, and the sheriff’s office will be investigating the Rancho Cordova homicide.

On Thursday morning, the sheriff’s office reported that the victim and Lewis were in a two year on-again-off-again relationship.

Lewis remains in stable condition and is expected to survive, according to the sheriff’s office.

Once he is released he will face a charge for murder from the sheriff’s office for the original crime in Rancho Cordova and the Elk Grove Police Department will add on their own charges for the events following.
