DUPAGE COUNTY, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The sheriff of DuPage County has now issued his own new statement on the state’s assault weapon ban and his recent meeting with other DuPage officials.

Sheriff James Mendrick’s newest statement indicates his deputies will be enforcing the assault weapon ban by arresting people who are breaking the law and are caught with the guns.

He says deputies will not be going to the homes of law-abiding residents to "harass them over gun registration". He adds that residents should “Please remove that stressor from your lives.”

Mendrick’s statement opens with a slap at the media-telling people not to listen to the media. He said he was not threatened with censure during his meeting with DuPage County Chair Deborah Conroy although Conroy did point out in their joint statement that she will not push for a censure resolution now that the sheriff has decided to enforce the law.

WBBM Newsradio has attempted to get an interview with Sheriff Mendrick.
