A woman was arrested Wednesday and charged with attempting to bring illegal drugs to an inmate at the Walker County Jail, using protein drinks.
The Walker County Sheriff's Office said 60-year-old Janice Niblett Johnson, of Sumiton, was arrested for Distribution of a Controlled Substance, and Promoting Prison Contraband.
The sheriff's office said Johnson reportedly brought protein drinks for inmate Nicholas Heath Rice, who was in custody for trafficking fentanyl and other charges.
The sheriff's office said a nurse on the medical staff for the county jail was advised by authorities that the drinks being delivered to Rice would more than likely contain contraband.
After the drinks were delivered, the sheriff's office said the medical staff confirmed the protein drinks had been tampered with.
The sheriff's office said 24 grams of methamphetamine, 23 grams of marijuana, Suboxone, and a battery were found inside the drinks.
Johnson showed up to court for Rice’s bond reduction hearing and was taken into custody during court.
Rice’s bond reduction request was also denied and he remains in jail on a $250,000 cash only bond.
The sheriff's office said a charge of Conspiracy to Commit a Controlled Substance Crime – Distribution of a Controlled Substance was added for allegedly arranging for the drugs to be delivered to the county jail.
