2023 started out with 26 people killed in the city of Baltimore.
That number matches the number of people killed in January of 2019.
For eight straight years, the city of Baltimore has seen over 300 homicides per year, and 2023 is not looking any different
Thiru Vignarajah has been vocal about Mayor Brandon Scott and his administration's plan when it comes to violence.
"When you go from 335 murders to 332 murders, back to 342 murders. You’re not really moving the needle in any direction," said Vignarajah.
Of the 26 homicides this year, all but four have been gun related. In 2022, 293 of the 355 homicides were gun-related.
One of the city's latest victims, 23-year-old Maya Morton, was shot and killed in the crossfire while sitting in her car.
Her two children were critically injured when Morton's car crashed after she was shot.
Meanwhile, several of this year's homicides have occurred in the Western District, the district of the mayor's Group Violence Reduction Strategy, or GVRS.
