Two people are dead from an apparent murder-suicide in Decatur Township in Van Buren County, according to the Michigan State Police.
They were identified as Wayne Westphal, 49, of Decatur and Tara Phillips, 34, of Decatur.
Initial evidence at the scene, as well as follow up investigations, continued to indicate this was an apparent murder suicide said the Michigan State Police.
On January 27, troopers responded to a home on the 38000 block of 82nd St. on reports of a suspicious situation, and two separate 911 calls informing them of a murder suicide taking place there.
One 911 phone call was from Westphal reporting a murder suicide. The second phone call was from relative of Phillips. Phillips called the relative prior to the incident to inform them of what was happening.
Police say it's unknown whether Phillips had moved out and was visiting the home, or if she was still living there.
When police arrived, they forced entry to the home after no one responded to the knocking on the door. They found a man and woman on the kitchen floor each with apparent gunshot wounds. A firearm was later observed underneath the man.
In the investigation, police determined Westphal and Phillips had previously been in a relationship together. A court issued no-contact order was in effect, and Phillips was named the protected party.
Detectives confirmed there was a history of domestic violence between them.
Police confirm there are no suspects at large and no danger to the public.
