Super Bowl LVII Marks 10th Meeting of Eagles, Chiefs; Here's the First Nine

The Eagles and Chiefs don’t have a lot of history playing each other.

In fact, Super Bowl LVII on Feb. 12 will be just their 10th meeting. The two teams are scheduled to play next fall in Kansas City, or maybe even Germany, but, as of now, it is Kansas City that holds the series lead by the slimmest of margins, with a 5-4 record against Philly.

For all you history buffs, here’s a brief look at each game in the series. Even for all you non-history buffs, maybe you’ll learn something and recall some of these names from the past.

OCT. 22, 1972

EAGLES 21, CHIEFS 20

The Eagles won two games this year, and this was one. They finished 2-11-1 under coach Ed Khayat, but he’ll always have this win over KC Hall of Fame coach Hank Stram, whose KC team went 8-6 in 1972.

Eagles QB Pete Liske started seven games in '72and threw all three of his TDs in this game - two to Harold Jackson from 36 and 41 yards, and one to Ben Hawkins that covered 67 yards.

KC quarterback Len Dawson, who was at the tail end of a 19-year Hall of Fame career, was 17-for-29 with 168 yards. Liske was 8-for-12 with 209 yards.

OCT. 11, 1992

CHIEFS 24, EAGLES 17

Both teams were good, with the Eagles finishing 11-5, beating the Saints in the wildcard round of the playoffs before falling to the Cowboys in the divisional round. The Chiefs went 10-6 and lost in the wildcard game.

In the loss, Randall Cunningham was outgunned by David Krieg, who threw for 272 yards and three touchdowns, two to J.J. Birden. Cunningham had 168 passing with two TDs to Pat Beach, but also had two interceptions.

SEPT. 27, 1998

CHIEFS 24, EAGLES 21

One loss in what would be a 3-13 season led to the firing of Ray Rhodes and the dawning of the Andy Reid era. Rodney Peete was the Eagles’ QB, but the team had a blossoming star at RB in Duce Staley, who was in his second season and finished it with 1,065 yards rushing with five touchdowns and 57 catches for 432 yards and another TD.

NOV. 29, 2001

EAGLES 23, CHIEFS 10

Donovan McNabb was entrenched as the franchise quarterback and threw for 269 in this one while Duce Staley ran for all three touchdowns.

OCT. 2, 2005

EAGLES 37, CHIEFS 31

Terrell Owens had 171 yards receiving and one touchdown while Jeremiah Trotter made 10 tackles and Sheldon Brown picked off Chiefs QB Trent Green twice.

SEPT. 27, 2009

EAGLES 34, CHIEFS 14

Kevin Kolb got the start in this one as Donovan McNabb healed from a broken rib suffered earlier in the season. Kolb completed 24-of-34 passes for 327 yards and touchdowns to Brent Celek and DeSean Jackson.

Celek had eight catches for 105 yards; Jackson had six catches for 149.

LeSean McCoy was a rookie and the RB had 20 runs for 84 yards.

SEPT. 19, 2013

CHIEFS 26, EAGLES 16

Michael Vick was intercepted twice, including a 38-yard pick-six from Eric Berry as Andy Reid's return to Philadelphia as KC's head coach was a success.

SEPT. 17, 2017

CHIEFS 27, EAGLES 20

This was a bump in the road for an Eagles team headed to their first Super Bowl championship, doing it in Doug Pederson’s second season. After losing, the Eagles ran off nine straight wins to finish 13-3 to earn the top seed in the NFC playoffs.

OCT. 3, 2021

CHIEFS 42, EAGLES 30

Philly was never in this one despite the final score and it was Reid’s 100th win as KC’s coach.

Patrick Mahomes led TD drives on six of the Chiefs’ seven possessions while Jalen Hurts threw for what is still his career-high of 387 yards and two touchdowns to try to stay in hailing distance of KC.

The Eagles had three touchdowns negated by penalties and the offense settled for field goals three times in the red zone.
