Shanahan Doesn’t See Scenario Where Jimmy Garoppolo Returns to 49ers

The 49ers still haven’t figured out their 2023 quarterback situation, but it sounds like Jimmy Garoppolo might not be in the picture next season.

San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan admitted he doesn’t see “any scenario” in which Garoppolo returns to the 49ers next season. This was all the detail Shanahan provided on Wednesday.

Garoppolo is a free agent this offseason, and given Shanahan’s remark, it doesn’t sound like the 49ers do not plan to re-sign him for next season.

As of now, this leaves the 49ers with Trey Lance, who has been out since Week 2 when he suffered a season-ending ankle injury, and rookie Brock Purdy, who is potentially out six months with a torn UCL.

Garoppolo has been with the 49ers since the 2017 season, but only started the majority of two seasons during that span. He lost out on the starting quarterback battle in the 2022 campaign to second-year player Lance.

When Lance was injured, Garoppolo started 10 games until he suffered a season-ending foot injury in Week 13.
