Former EastEnders star Danny Dyer has said he wasn't a fan of how his character Mick Carter was written towards the end.

During the BBC soap's Christmas Day episodes, Mick made his exit – diving into the sea and seemingly drowning while trying to save his beloved Linda Carter.

Chatting to iFL TV about the open-ended nature of his exit, Dyer acknowledged the Neighbours twist of 1996, which saw Ian Smith's Harold Bishop cheat death after being similarly washed away five years prior.

"He died, didn't he, and then he come back! Washed up funnily enough... he lost his memory," he said, before declaring "who knows" when pressed on Mick's potential return.

"They've kept it open. I could turn up in three years smothered in seaweed."

When reflecting on the character, Dyer said that while he was "very grateful" for the opportunity, he wasn't enthusiastic about where the soap took the character.

"I didn't quite know how [Mick's final scenes were] gonna go down," he said. "I felt my character had lost his way. I didn't quite know who I was playing anymore, it was a really odd thing.

"I'm very grateful for that job. It was a good gig, but now it's time to move on. I wanna get out again and make some low-budget films."

Next up for the actor is his Netflix gameshow Cheat, co-presented by Strictly Come Dancing's Ellie Taylor. It premieres Wednesday, March 1 and will run for 12 episodes in total.

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
