Escondido police said a 34-year-old mother was seriously injured when her boyfriend stabbed her in their apartment Wednesday morning, and one of her children ran for help.

Officers were called to an apartment building on North Quince Street near West Washington Avenue shortly before 7 a.m. after neighbors reported hearing loud arguing. When officers arrived they found the victim bleeding profusely from multiple stab wounds inside the apartment, said Escondido police Sgt. Mike Graesser.

She was rushed to a hospital and doctors told police she was expected to survive, said police Lt. Erik Witholt.

The woman’s 42-year-old boyfriend was found outside the apartment and arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. His hands were bloody when he was detained, police said.

The woman’s two young children — ages 5 and 7 — also lived at the home. The older child ran to neighboring apartment and told residents his mother was being stabbed, Graesser said.

The man who was arrested is not the biological father of the two children, Witholt said.
