Tom Brady Announces Retirement; Commanders Affected?

For the second straight year, the month of February has begun with a Tom Brady retirement announcement ... only this time it's "for good."

Brady announced his retirement early Wednesday morning in a selfie video on social media, exactly one year after he announced his retirement.

"Thank you guys for allowing me to live my dream," Brady said in a video holding back tears. "I wouldn't change a thing."

Should Brady stay retired, it adds a new wrinkle to the quarterback market for the offseason, which includes the Washington Commanders.

Assuming Brady is truly done, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will likely look for a new quarterback. The team rosters Kyle Trask, who they drafted in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft, but he is unproven and the team would likely want to place a veteran next to him.

Players like Derek Carr, Aaron Rodgers and Jimmy Garoppolo - all of whom are Commanders quarterback targets - suddenly become options for the Bucs for next season.

The Bucs are $55 million over the cap, second-worst in the NFL, so signing a player like that will be difficult. But for a team that has made the playoffs for the past three years, it might try to stretch out this contender window for one more season to try and squeeze out as much as it can from majority of a roster that won a Super Bowl just two years ago.

So, the Commanders have competition, but it remains to be seen if the Bucs are serious threats to Washington's plans.
