2022 Maryland State Games: Spotlights

After a long and eventful 2022, the calendar has official turned over to the year 2023. Over the next few weeks, our staff will dive into top performers from events in 2022, highlighting both position players and pitchers, with data and video included.

First on the docket is a look back at our illustrious Maryland State Games which had close to 60 of the top players across Maryland and Delaware participate. Among the participants, the 2022 State Games churned out 15 commitments.

Below is a look into 5 top performers from the event.

Dominic Moats OF / SS / Gilman, MD / 2024

One of the more physical athletes across the state, the University of Maryland recruit possesses a strong 6-foot, 205 pound frame with freakish athleticism. Hitting from a slightly crouched, balanced setup, Moats gets the hands through the zone quick with plenty of backspin created to the gaps and alleys. Attacking with intent, the power numbers continue to rise (103 Max EV) and with plus speed (6.50 60-yard) and plus arm strength (85 OF Velo), Moats will look to back up his No. 1 ranking in the Class of 2024 this Spring with Gilman.

EJ Hankerson OF / 2B / Calvert Hall, MD / 2023

Yet another University of Maryland recruit, Hankerson showcased his skillset fully in late June, showcasing a strong line drive approach with an easy, compact stroke at the dish. Creating plenty of extension through contact, the ball jumps to the pull side (95 Max EV) with the ability to utilize the whole field effectively. Another speedy outfielder (6.95 60-Yard), Hankerson can impact the game in multiple facets and looks to have a breakout year for Calvert Hall this Spring.

Miguel Herb C / OF / Caravel Academy (DE), MD / 2024

One of my favorite athletes across the state of Delaware, the smooth swinging Army recruit not only showcased the hit tool, but also showed positional versatility that bodes well at the next level. At the dish, the hands work with rhythm and slight twitch, consistently lacing line drives to the pull side gap with authority. Creating excellent backspin to the gaps, Herb's power numbers will continue to rise as the body fills out. Behind the dish, the hands work quick with sound footwork and a strong arm with carry to the bag (1.88-1.97 Pops / 78 C Velo). Herb also showcased solid footwork and plus arm strength (88 OF Velo) from the outfield, showcasing the ability to lock down a corner outfield spot at the next level if need be.

Angel Santiago-Cruz SS / RHP / Severna Park, MD / 2024

Still uncommitted, the 2022 Future Games Alum continues to showcase why he is one of the top two-way talents in the state. Possessing a projectable 6-foot-2, 195 pound frame, Santiago-Cruz uses a ton of leverage at the dish with a slightly uphill swing path, creating backspin to the pull side gap consistently. Plus bat speed (75.0) and torque in the lower half adds a ton of value to consistent barrel control.

Austin Schurman SS / RHP / Appoquinimink (DE), DE / 2025

Another top uncommitted player in the 2025 class, Schurman showcases strong, quick hands (24.5 Max Hand Speed) at the dish with loud line drive tendencies to the middle fo the field. The strength is to the pull side with the ability to spray line drives to both gaps and alleys. As the barrel control and frame continue to get cleaner, look for Schurman to take that next step this Spring with Appoquinimink.
