These 4 Arizona pizzerias were named best in US. And it's not the spots you'd think

The most popular pie at Pizzeria Bocce in Cottonwood is the Cire’s with house-made Italian sausage, pepperoni, ricotta, mushrooms, basil and fresh mozzarella.

Yelp released a list of top pizza spots in the US and Canada and four metro Phoenix pizzerias made the cut. Described as an "all-time list of the Top Pizza Spots in the US," factors taken into account included the reviewers' ratings and total volume.

While I'm happy to see Phoenix pizzerias on the list, the omission of well-known Valley pizza joints, such as Pizzeria Bianco, Myke's and Cibo, is sure to raise a few eyebrows.

Here's a look at the Arizona pizza restaurants that made Yelp's best list.

My Slice of the Pie Pizzeria in Arcadia ranked No. 18

My Slice of the Pie Pizzeria in Arcadia ranked No. 18 and received 4.5 stars from 604 reviewers. The pizzeria offers New York-style pizzas with Southwest flavors inspired by the owner's sister-in-law's hometown Culiacan, Mexico. Although Yelp listed “You Gotta Carne Asada,” according to co-owner Karen Zatarian, al pastor is the most popular option.

"Our Al Pastor recipe is a family recipe and we make most of our ingredients from scratch," she said.

Base Pizzeria in Biltmore ranked No. 57

Sibling-owned Base Pizzeria, aptly located at the base of Piestewa Peak, ranked 57th, receiving 4.5 stars from 389 reviewers. This is a spot where you'll find pizzas like the smelly date, made with fior di latte, gorgonzola, crispy prosciutto and dates, topped with organic arugula and aged balsamic.

Brad P. wrote: "Owners are often on-site. that alone is a great start. Ingredients are fresh and top-notch yet the prices are still manageable. That's a tricky balance that Base does extremely well."

Pizzeria Bocce in Cottonwood ranked No. 68

Pizzeria Bocce in Cottonwood took 68th place with 4.5 stars from 731 reviewers. The restaurant offers antipasti, salads, panini, Neapolitan pizzas and desserts.

Pizza A Metro in Encanto ranked No. 81

Pizza A Metro on West Thomas Road made the list at No. 81 with 4.5 stars from 553 reviewers. The name refers to their one-meter or 39-inch rectangular pizzas, which they offer in addition to their 6- and 12-inch rounds. But pizza is not the only option on the menu. Homemade pastas, salads, hot and cold appetizers, entrees and desserts are also available.

Cheri R. wrote: "Probably the best white pie we've had in Arizona. All in all, fantastic experience all around. We'll definitely be coming back."
