Traffic on the Hutchinson River Parkway was snarled for most of the morning Wednesday as a truck carrying 42,000 pounds of frozen french fries slammed into overpass.
Police say the truck was traveling illegally on the parkway in Scarsdale when it hit the Mamaroneck Road overpass around 7 a.m.
The top of the truck's trailer sheared off and split in half.
All the southbound lanes were closed as crews removed debris and diesel fuel from the parkway. DEP crews were brought in to make sure the diesel fuel didn't run off into nearby sewer systems.
Northbound traffic was backed up for miles as drivers slowed to rubberneck the crash. Police reported some small accidents as cars bumped into each other and people stopped to take pictures.
Eventually the truck was moved to an off-ramp, and the cargo of French fries was off-loaded to another truck.
No injuries have been reported, but the driver of the truck was hit with numerous citations for being on the parkway illegally.
All lanes were reopened.
