Press release from Providence:

top 5 vascular surgery in state 2023 award badge for st joseph hospitalProvidence St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka is pleased to announce that Healthgrades, the leading marketplace connecting doctors and patients, has awarded the hospital with a top 5 hospital ranking in California for quality in vascular surgery outcomes.

o determine this year’s State Ranking recipients, Healthgrades evaluated clinical performance for nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide focusing on 18 key specialties across a mix of chronic, urgent, and surgical specialty areas. Hospitals recognized as among the top 5 in their state by Healthgrades are providing patients with consistently better-than expected clinical outcomes.

“Being recognized as one of the top 5 in California for vascular surgery is a tremendous achievement that speaks to St. Joseph Hospital’s ongoing commitment to high-quality care. Hospitals receiving a #5 ranking in their state have a proven track record of delivering superior outcomes for the patients in their community,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer and Head of Data Science, Healthgrades.

Vascular surgery is a treatment option for patients who suffer from vascular disease, which affects the body’s arteries, blood vessels, veins, and tiny capillaries that carry blood. It also covers the lymphatic system—the small vessels through which a fluid called lymph, containing infection-fighting white blood cells, travels from the tissues into the blood.

At St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka, Huy Trieu, MD, and Michael Palmer, MD, are surgeons who perform the vast majority of vascular surgeries at the hospital. According to Dr. Palmer, in addition to standard vascular procedures, he and Dr. Trieu started performing a new procedure in 2019 called TCAR – or Transcarotid Artery Revascularization. TCAR is a is a minimally invasive procedure that can clear blockages and open a narrowed carotid artery.

“TCAR is a minimally invasive stenting procedure that has the lowest documented stroke rate for carotid stenting ever recorded,” stated Dr. Palmer, who’s been a surgeon in Humboldt County since 1989. “This is enormously beneficial for patients at high risk for open surgery. We do the procedure in our cath lab and most patients go home the next day.”

“To have these exceptional vascular services and procedures available in Humboldt County is an incredible asset to the health and wellbeing of our community,” said Darian Harris, chief executive, Providence in Humboldt County. “This recognition speaks to the immense clinical capability available at our Providence facilities as well as the unwavering commitment of our clinicians, caregivers and leaders in providing outstanding, high-quality care for our community on the North Coast.”

We salute elder doctors like Dr Palmer, who has to be around 70…

Hey, look at some brain scans and compare a 70 year old brain to a 30 year old brain…

Read this account of a Neurosurgeon’s thoughts about his own cancer, getting older, skill levels and dying:

https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2023/01/30/1152038098/cancer-diagnosis-transforms-neurosurgeon-turned-patient

and remember that death can be uncomfortable…

And let us not forget this story either:

https://insiderexclusive.com/americas-hospital-of-horrors-tenet-healthcare-the-400-million-dollar-health-care-fraud-story/

Same thing happened at Adventist Health: In 2011 the cardiac surgery unit was fined for doing unnecessary endarterectomies…

Like I said to Dr Myers (a Cardiologist who shot his neighbor’s dog in a pen), just give me the stents now, please, and don’t wait till I need them…

Take care when surgery is recommended, and “Vascular Surgery” may be a miracle cure, but it’s possible that you didn’t really need it…

Beware of a hospital that constantly runs promotional items for speciality services while unable to staff properly or keep Maternity Services open…

Dr Myers (a Cardiologist who shot his neighbor’s dog in a pen)
was my husband’s Dr., He put my Hubby on 80 mg of simvastatin, 40 is the max recommended.
After 2 yrs of my hubby complaining of severe muscle cramps and other issues, Meyers said he was just lazy and didn’t want to exercise. The heart is a muscle.
It turned out my hubby has a genetic condition that causes statins to destroy muscle tissue. The severe cramps stopped when he stopped taking the medication.
It also took 10 years and 3 Doctors later to discover when they put in his pacemaker, they connected the leads to the wrong place. That was repaired last year, and He now is healthy and feels great.
I believe Meyers tried to kill him.

Muscle problems caused by statins: Can a genetic test reveal your risk …Serious but rare. In the study used to validate StatinSmart’s genetic test, the researchers defined myopathy as symptoms of myalgia (muscle pain) in addition to a creatine kinase (CK) level more than 10 times higher than normal. CK is an enzyme in the blood that rises in response to muscle damage. This type of myopathy is very serious …

I had the same reaction to statins. I now have them listed on my Allergy/ASE list. I was taking Lipitor and it destroyed the tendons in my hands and feet. I can barely hold an ink pen anymore and it’s been over 7 years since I quit that shit. What pisses me off is that my cholesterol levels weren’t even high… the doctor prescribed them because being a diabetic I was at a higher risk.

Yeah. Sure.

There is a choice here. And the other option is no surgeon at all. I’ve had an issue with him too. He is not an endearing fellow. But when there is a urgent need, boy will you be happy he’s here. He will gladly tell you that too.

Just so we’re all clear on this information… the reason why St Joes rates so high on this metric is because they send the more difficult cases out of the area in order to keep that JACHO score high. It’s not because anyone is getting better care… it’s because they send anything the least bit complicated down to Stanford or UC Davis. Which is probably best for the patients overall…

Just had a recent trip to the ER in Willits taking my mom there for some broken ribs. What a shit show that was!! Nurses and other people in and out of the room, I bet not 1 of them was in there for more than 3 minutes. No one could hang around long enough to answer her questions. None of them was telling the other what was going on,IV turned into a blood bath, wrong prescriptions, sent to the wrong place, not billed to insurance, blood work ordered but not done… Then 2 chest scans and $30,000 later they say well just take it easy, there’s nothing we can really do, come back in a week. It was over $900 just to have the physician check my mom’s breathing with a stethoscope and give her instructions on how frequently to take the pain pills. They up charged and over charged every little thing they could. Now we are talking to attorneys about it all. I wonder how much the same thing would have cost at St Joes or Mad River.
Basically, don’t get hurt around here!
