Lewis County Wrestling travelled to Huntington this weekend for the largest and toughest tournament held in West Virginia each year, and came away with two wrestlers in the Top 8 of their classes in a tournament where it’s considering a feat to make the second day of wrestling.
The WSAZ Tournament is widely considered a proving ground for West Virginia’s best, and features 784 wrestlers from 58 high schools in seven states. This years field boasted 18 previous state title winners and 52 state place winners among it’s ranks.
Each bracket at WSAZ consists of 64 wrestlers. The first round is single elimination before reverting to double elimination.
Lewis County sent 12 wrestlers to the event and Coach Larry Bush said the goal for this team was to get as many athletes into the second day of competition as possible.
After the dust had settled on day one, Lewis County had four wrestlers still standing: Trenton Bush, Tyler Carson, Luke Boram, and Landon Bush.
“This is the toughest tournament around and to have four wrestlers advance to the second day is great,” Coach Larry J. Bush Jr. said of his team’s performance.
Trenton Bush ended up with a sixth-place finish after being forced to injury default out of his final match do to some nagging injuries. Tyler Carson took eighth in a stacked weight class.
“Tyler had a tremendous weekend and finished eighth in a very tough 215-pound weight class, he’s been working very hard and he continues to wrestle well,” Bush added.
Landon Bush impressed with a top 16 finish as a freshman, and Luke Boram turned in a strong performance that ended in the opening match of day two after a tough draw to begin the day.
