A derogatory slur was discovered on a Patchogue street sign on the eve of Black History Month.
A sign at the end of Roe Road contained graffiti that uses the "N word."
A Mastic Beach man tells News 12 he saw the sign while walking into the Mud Creek Dog Park on Tuesday.
"It immediately made me want to turn around and leave the property," says Nehemiah Johnson. "I'm offended by the sign - nowhere in any neighborhood should you pull up on a sign and it indicates something like this."
Johnson says he filed a report with the Town of Brookhaven.
Suffolk police confirm to News 12 that Hate Crimes detectives have been notified.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
