Night Court‘s Dan Fielding isn’t ready to start dating again… but that won’t stop his new courtroom pals from nudging him along.
In this week’s episode, we learn that Dan has been quite a magnet for the ladies since his return to night court. His latest client can’t resist groping him (“My husband’s in a coma”), and he tells Abby that another woman randomly yelled out at him: “I’d like to climb that!” He’s so besieged by sexual offers that when a woman played by sitcom great Wendie Malick approaches him, he instantly cuts her off, thinking she’s trying to hit on him. She was just looking for the records room, though, and after Dan sheepishly apologizes, they hit it off. (They both still read newspapers… and do the jumble!) Her name is Julianne, and Dan gets her number, but he’s hesitant about opening his heart again after his wife’s death. When Abby tells him she and the courtroom gang are all the emotional connection he needs, though, that’s enough to spur him to pick up the phone.
Abby’s social calendar is empty with her fiancé still living upstate, and Neil is equally lonely, so they decide to pop in on Dan’s date with Julianne to make sure he’s OK. (Neil’s been stood up a lot, so he knows the feeling.) When they get to the restaurant, Dan is indeed dining alone, but he admits he never texted Julianne in the first place. He did compose a text to her that he never sent, and when Neil goes ahead and sends it, Julianne eagerly shows up. Dan is hopelessly awkward when she arrives — his opening line, for some reason, is “Hello, sailor!” — and Neil has to pull him aside for a breather. Abby chats with Julianne and grows wary when she says she’s just out for a fling… but once Dan hears that, his nerves suddenly disappear, and he and Julianne ditch dinner to go home together.
Back at Dan’s place with a cheap bottle of wine, Julianne quickly makes a move, but Dan gets nervous again, fending off her advances with a rainstick. (“How about we move to a different room with a different stick?” she counters.) He starts to wax sentimental about getting the rainstick in Costa Rica with his wife, but she stops him mid-anecdote, admitting that this seduction was all just “a revenge plot” after Dan prosecuted her years ago for torching her ex’s house. (He’s on her vengeance list “between my ex-mother in law and Boost Mobile.”) She wanted to steal his identity and ruin his life, but she sees now it’s already ruined. Oof. A despondent Dan confides in Abby the next day at work, and she admits she’s been lonely, too. Maybe they can rely on each other for emotional support — although we know Dan hates all that mushy stuff.
Elsewhere in “Dan vs. Dating”: Olivia desperately needed a new office after working out of the courthouse’s ladies room, so she agreed to share an abandoned office with Gurgs. Soon, though, Olivia found Gurgs and her calendar of “hot mugshot guys” a little too distracting and looked for a way out. But after she and Gurgs bonded over their shared anxieties, they decided to stick it out as officemates. (“Are we work wives now?” Olivia asked.) Oh, and Gurgs acted out the movie Die Hard for Olivia, who had somehow never seen it before. And she calls herself educated.
We’re now four episodes into the new Night Court — what’s your verdict so far? Give it a grade in our poll, and hit the comments to share your thoughts.
I actually enjoyed this episode better than any of the others. Abby was a little less annoying, and I liked her cat blouse. It was great seeing Wendie Malick again. Her character tonight reminded me a bit of her Nina Van Horn. As usual, Dan Fielding was the best thing about it.
It also feels like the cast needs someone else.
As in an additional member..
Somebody funny. (Besides Dan.)
I hope wendie’s appearance was an audition. The Abby character is gag-worthy – as in barf, not joke.
After four episodes, Dan is the only good character in this show. All five of them work good jobs & they would in theory be well-educated. So why is Neil so lonely? Didn’t he meet friends in school? Olivia is smart; she ought to make Dan’s life in the courtroom challenging. I feel like Gurgs is supposed to be slapstick funny, but I disagree with that.
* Well, Neil has been condemned to work in the boonies of the night court, so his work schedule isn’t regular human daytime hours and thus, even if he has friends outside of work, he isn’t seeing them often, if at all.
.
* Yes, Olivia is smart. That can’t be her only defining trait, so exploring her work world outside of courtroom battle with Dan (that, because of Dan’s breadth and depth of experience, she is as likely to lose as Christine was in the original series) can only help to make her a *credible* foil for Dan. As in a character and not a type.
.
* Bull in the original show was mostly one of the main sources of slapstick both becuase of his height and because of his naivete. Despite Gurgs’s resemblance to Roz, she’s filling the Bull role and IMO Olivia is the one who is fulfilling the Roz role (by way of Christine).
I’ve watched all four of the reboot episodes, and so far, it feels like it fails to meet the magic of the original by a long shot.
Not liking it.
It took about 3 years, 4 to get the cast you loved together yr1 cast only Harry. Dan and Bull made it to the end. So a recast may need to be in order, Markie Post was the rare straight man, that you rooted for but could turn goofy on a dime and sell it every time
I am really enjoying this show so far! Dan is great, and this episode started to build the other characters around him. Looking forward to next week.
This is one of the few good reboots on television. Its a fun half hour and so far I am really liking it.
Best episode of the four tonight.
Enjoying it so far.
Watched the first two episodes. A few funny moments but not many. Lame plots. Laugh tracks are always a bad idea.
I honestly love the reboot sequel. John Larroquette is excellent, as always, and I like the supporting cast. The set up is good. And honestly, it’s a lot better than the first two seasons of the original! Sure, it could use a little work but over all, really enjoying it!!
This was the best episode so far, and that is not saying much.
They need to get rid of Olivia and Gurgs. They are not funny at all.
Neil is not funny, but that is OK. At least he has chemistry with Abby. And that is obviously where they are going.
I like Melissa Rouch enough to try to embrace the character of Abby, but so far I am not impressed. But, her character is growing. I think once they bring in her Mom and her fiance the character will be better.
Dan Fielding, of course, is the best part of the reboot. Without him, the showv would be unwatchable.
They also need to get rid of the laugh track. It is just annoying!
We watched the first two episodes and were not impressed. I don’t think we’re going to continue.
I like it.
This show needs to be canceled ❌ it’s too unfunny for words. Force laughs, bad acting, and just a nightmare
It’d be easier on everyone if you just stopped watching!
I like it. It’s wacky and a little juvenile, much like the original, which i loved. It’s fun, which we need these days.
Without Dan this reboot would be a total failure.
The remaining cast do not have the talent or experience to work along side John Larroquette.
Gurgs seems to be trying to be Roz. She isn’t even close.
Neil is boring. No wonder he’s single. Olivia is simply irritating…..Every now and then Abby is almost ok…
This just leaves Dan/John
to carry the entire program.
I have watched all 4 episodes hoping for it to get better.
As earlier stated without Dan/John this program would have lost me on episode 3.
Thanks NBC for the reboot it’s not the original it could use Warfield and Shannon thanks Dan for coming back
I’ve never watched the original, but I’m enjoying this one. It’s fun, and it doesn’t feel like it is trying too hard. Many of the laughs seem genuine to me, too.
This show is great the TBBT case has done well in entertaining me post TBBT
I hope the writing gets better. Not overly fond of Abby’s character as they are writing/developing it.
She’s too cutesy, needs to be a bit more rough around the edges & long distance romance, 🥱.
Has potential if writing gets better
After 2 episodes, I couldn’t get past that obnoxious laugh track.
I agree that most of the characters don’t make sense. Neil is a good-looking lawyer, yet somehow he’s also a lonely loser who’s constantly getting stood up? Olivia is a smart district attorney, but she has no place to work but the bathroom? Meanwhile, Abby seems more like a collection of quirks than an actual person. The actors seem fine — it’s the writers who need to spend more time figuring this show out.
Well if you ask me
Night Court is awesome
Man I Loved it it’s phenomenal
I’m blessed of God that night
Court is back on
I really enjoy the show, I loved the original. it’s an easy watch.
The show will never be as funny as it was, can’t do what they did back in the day before all the PC, sensitive, loonies started roaming the USA.
After four episodes, I’ve smiled a couple of times and winced a great deal. Hate the laugh track and find most of the characters unbelievable and uninvolving. I likely won’t be continuing with it.
