STEWART: INVESTIGATORS HAVE NOT LINKED THE 3 DEADLY SHOOTINGS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTY AND STILL HAVE NOT ANNOUNCED ANY SUSPECTS, ARREST, OR MOTIVES. 55 PEOPLE SHOWED UP AT A VOLUSIA COUNTY SHERIFF’S LATEST CAREER FAIR A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF POTENTIAL EMPLOYEES CONSIDERING THE RECENT EVENTS IN MEMPHIS THAT HAVE PEOPLE ONCE AGAIN CALLING FOR POLICE REFORM. WITNESSING LIVE TRAINING OPERATIONS AS THEY WENT THROUGH THE APPLICATION PROCESS. >> THEY UNDERSTAND FROM DAY ONE WHAT IS EXPECTED FROM THEM, WHAT WILL BE TOLERATED, WHAT WON’T BE TOLERATED, AND THAT IS HOW YOU CHANGE THE CULTURE. CLAIRE: SHERIFF MIKE CHITWOOD SAYS HIS AGENCY IS LASER FOCUSED ON DE-ESCALATION TACTICS. AND SINCE THE AGENCY OPENED ITS OWN POLICE TRAINING ACADEMY IN 2021, RECRUITS ARE IMMERSED IN THOSE SPECIFIC PRACTICES. INCLUDING SANCTITY OF LIFE. THE SHERIFF IS CAUTIOUS BUT GRATEFUL WHEN POINTING OUT VCSO DIDN’T HAVE A DEPUTY-INVOLVED SHOOTING IN ALL OF 2022. >> WE HAVE REDUCED OUR USE OF FORCE BY OVER 50%. INJURIES TO DEPUTIES AND SUSPECTS ARE DOWN BY ALMOST 60%. CLAIRE: WHILE CANDIDATES WERE AT THE CAREER FAIR, A VIDEO CONTINUALLY PLAYED OF FATAL POLICE ENCOUNTERS, INCLUDING TYRE NICHOLS, GEORGE FLOYD, RODNEY KING, WITH A GRAPHIC THAT READ, "IF YOU THINK THIS IS WHAT LAW ENFORCEMENT IS ABOUT, YOU DON’T BELONG HERE." BUT DESPITE BACKGROUND CHECKS, PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMS, CRISIS RESOLUTION PRACTICES, SHERIFF CHITWOOD ADMITS ALL LAW ENFORCEMENT HIRES FROM THE HUMAN RACE. >> IF YOU ARE A RACIST, IF YOU ARE BRUTAL, I MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO DETECT THAT. CLAIRE: THE AGENCY HAS MADE CONDITIONAL OFFERS TO 26 CANDIDATES, AND HAS SEVERAL OTHERS WHO COULDN’T ATTEND IN PERSON BUT ARE PROMISING ON PAPER. Fifty-five people showed up at Volusia County sheriff's latest career fair, a significant number of potential employees considering the recent events in Memphis that have people once again calling for police reform. Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood says the agency doesn't shy away from showing recruits what is always unacceptable when it comes to policing.“They are trained in our culture, in our policies, in our procedures,” Chitwood said. At Saturday's career fair, even before any candidate is officially hired, all got a look at how the Volusia County sheriff's department operates, witnessing live training operations as they went through the application process.“They understand from day one what is expected from them, what will be tolerated, what won't be tolerated and that is how you change the culture,” Chitwood said. Chitwood says his agency is laser-focused on de-escalation tactics and since the agency opened its own police training academy in 2021, recruits are immersed in those specific practices, including the sanctity of life. The sheriff is cautious but grateful when pointing out VCSO didn't have a deputy-involved shooting in all of 2022.“We have reduced our use of force by over 50%,” Chitwood said. “Injuries to deputies and suspects are down by almost 60%.”While candidates were at the career fair, a video continually played fatal police encounters including Tyre Nichols, George Floyd and Rodney King with a graphic that read, “if you think this is what law enforcement is about, you don't belong here.”But despite background checks, psychological exams, and crisis resolution practices, Chitwood admits all law enforcement hires from the human race.“If you are a racist, if you are brutal, I might not be able to detect that. I don't have an X-ray machine that can look into your soul and find out what's there,” Chitwood said.The agency has made conditional offers to 26 candidates. It has several others who couldn't attend in person but are promising on paper. The sheriff hopes they have the right stuff and more importantly, will do the right thing.
