A South Bend Police officer discharged his weapon while responding to a shots fired call on Sunday.
On Tuesday, the St. Joseph County Prosecutors office determined that the officer was justified in firing his weapon.
The investigation was completed by the St. Joseph County Police and Mishawaka Police Departments.
After reviewing the investigation, the prosecutor’s office charged Jacquise Mickens, 32, of South Bend with pointing a firearm and criminal recklessness.
Court documents say a witness saw the officer approach Mickens’ home. Mickens was then seen partially opening the door with a handgun in her hand.
Court records say her arm was extended, and a handgun pointed at the officer. That’s when the officer fired his weapon two times and took cover behind a tree.
The officer involved called out to other officers that shots had been fired.
Police responded and surrounded the home. Mickens eventually exited and was detained.
