Open house job expo scheduled for Wednesday

REPORTER: THE GREENSBURG Y IS HOSTING A JOB EXPO TOMORROW HOPING TO GET SOME OF THE DOZENS OF OPENINGS FILLED. POSITIONS THAT HAVE FORCED THEM TO MAKE SOME PRETTY TOUGH DECISIONS, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO CHILD CARE PROGRAMS. THE LAST THING GREENSBURG YMCA CEO SUZANNE PRINTZ WANTS TO SEE IS EMPTY CLASSROOMS. BUT ACROSS THE Y’S NINE SITES FOR CHILD CARE, SEVEN OF THEM ARE CURRENTLY CLOSED DUE TO STAFFING SHORTAGES. >> IN OUR BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM WE COULD TAKE UP TO 200. RIGHT NOW WE HAVE 48. REPORTER: THE Y HAVING TO TURN AWAY DOZENS OF FAMILIES AFTER A MASS STAFFING EXODUS IN NOVEMBER. >> WE’RE NOT ABLE TO PAY WHAT WE’D LOVE TO PAY WITH COMPETITING INDUSTRIES IN THE AREA. REPORTER: PRINTZ SAYS THE Y IS WORKING ON SOLUTIONS THAT WON’T PUT THE BURDEN ON PARENTS TO PAY MORE FOR CHILD CARE, FROM REQUESTING MORE FUNDING FROM THE STATE TO POTENTIALLY PARTNERING WITH AREA BUSINESSES. BUT MONEY ASIDE, PRINTZ SAYS THE Y ISN’T ALONE. >> CHILD CARE IS IN CRISIS RIGHT NOW. NOT JUST THE YMCA, BUT ALL DAYCARE PROVIDERS. WE ARE IN A REAL CRISIS. WE HAVE TO SOLVE THIS. REPORTER: THE Y IS LOOKING HIRE ABOUT 70 PEOPLE. THEY’VE ALSO HAD TO CUT ACTIVITIES FOR THE GENERAL PUBLIC INCLUDING LIMITING HOURS AT THE POOL. Open house job expo scheduled for Wednesday

The Greensburg YMCA is looking for help in the midst of what officials called a staffing crisis Tuesday. The lack of staff has forced the YMCA to cut multiple programs and temporarily close the Early Childhood Learning Center."We get letters from parents, seemingly in tears, saying they are going to lose their job without care for their child," CEO Suzanne Printz said.Printz said the staffing issues started at the beginning of the pandemic but escalated in November when a large number of staff members left."Our wages, because we're a non-profit, we're not able to pay what we'd love to pay with competing industries in the area," Printz said.Printz said the organization is looking at possibilities to help increase salaries, including requesting additional funding from the state and potentially partnering with area businesses. Interested part-time or full-time applicants can visit the Y at 101 S. Maple Street in Greensburg from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. YMCA officials are encouraging any interested applicants to bring a resume with them.
