Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert says police officers 'saved many lives' reacting to gunman at Target
THERE WERE SOME PEOPLE HIDING IN THERE. WE COULD NOT FIND ANYBODY THAT HAS BEEN HURT. WE DID A SECOND SWEEP JUST TO REALLY ENSURE IT. AND WE’RE IN THE PROCESS OF A THIRD AT THIS POINT IN TIME. WE DON’T HAVE ANY WORKERS OR CUSTOMERS OR ANY CIVILIANS IN THIS MATTER HURT OTHER THAN THE SUSPECT IS DEAD. AND BY THE BY GUNSHOT TO OMAHA, POLICE. WE WILL CONTINUALLY UPDATE THE MEDIA ON THIS SITUATION. IT’S UNFOLD IN THE INVESTIGATION IS JUST STARTING. WE DID RECEIVE I KNOW AT THIS POINT, AT LEAST 29 911 CALLS FOR THE ACTIVE SHOOTER RESPONSE. AND MY MY INITIAL MY INITIAL TAKE IS WHEN I CAME OUT HERE AND HEARD THIS COMING, THAT THIS IS WHAT YOU WANT WHEN YOU HAVE AN ACTIVE SHOOTER IN YOUR CITY, YOU WANT A MASSIVE RESPONSE LIKE THIS. SO I WANT TO THANK ALL THE SURROUNDING AGENCIES, FEDERAL, COUNTY, STATE. AND I WANT TO THANK THE MALL POLICE OFFICERS WHO RESPONDED TO THIS MATTER AS WELL. CHIEF TOUCHSMART, OUR BRIEFING REPORTERS JUST OVER 90 MINUTES AGO NOW, WE SPOKE WITH SEVERAL TARGET EMPLOYEES ONCE THEY KNEW THEY WERE SAFE AND THEY SHARED WHAT THEY EXPERIENCED INSIDE. POLICE SAID THE NINE ON ONE CALLS STARTED COMING AT 1159. AT 1159. WHAT DID YOU GUYS SEE? I HAD JUST LEFT FOR MY BREAK AND I WAS ACTUALLY IN THE FRONT RESTROOM, SO I HEARD THE FIRST GUNSHOT GO OFF AND I WAS CONCERNED THAT THAT’S WHAT IT MIGHT BE, BUT I WASN’T ENTIRELY SURE. AND THAT’S WHEN I GOT A TEXT ON MY PHONE SAYING THAT TO STAY WHERE I WAS OR TO RUN. SO I TEXTED MY MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY AND TOLD THEM THAT I LOVED THEM AND THAT THIS MIGHT BE IT. I WAS IN THE BACK OF THE STORE. I WAS LUCKY. I WAS 2 MINUTES BEFORE THAT. I WAS LIKE RIGHT IN THE FRONT OF THE STORE. SO I GOT LUCKY. WHAT’S GOING THROUGH YOUR HEAD WHEN YOU SEE YOUR FELLOW EMPLOYEES SPRINTING? MY LEGS ARE SHAKING. AND I CALL THE POLICE AND IT’S THE PHONE SO ACTIVE THEY DON’T ANSWER FOR LIKE 2 MINUTES. SO I WAS LIKE, HOLY COW. YEAH. SO I GOT HOME FROM SCHOOL AND MY PHONE STARTED BLOWING UP AND CHECKED IN. IT WAS MY TARGET GROUP CHAT A BUNCH OF MY FRIENDS, THEY’RE SAYING, OH, THERE WAS SHOOTING IN THE STORE AND SO I HAD A COUPLE OF FRIENDS. ONE OF THEM ACTUALLY SAW LIKE THE GUNMAN AND HE HELPED EVACUATE PEOPLE AND THERE WAS A LOT OF PEOPLE LIKE FROZEN OR LIKE JUST KIND OF TRAUMATIZED FROM WHAT WAS HAPPENING. AT FIRST I WAS LIKE, WAS THAT A GUNSHOT? I DON’T KNOW WHAT I HEARD. AND THEN I JUST I WAS DOING A PERSONAL SHOPPING ORDER. AND SO THEN I KEPT DOING MY ORDER AND THEN MY COWORKER RAN BY AND SHE SAID, HE’S GOT A GUN. GET OUT. AND SO I LEFT THE STORE. WE HAD BUY IN THE STORE. SO I ONLY HEARD ANYTHING. I DIDN’T SEE ANYTHING, BUT I TEXTED HER TO ME. SHE WAS JUST MAKE SURE SHE WAS ALL RIGHT. AND SHE IS. I HIGHTAILED IT OUT OF THERE. WE DO A LOT OF TRAINING ON ACTIVE SHOOTING, AND WE’RE LUCKY WE GOT EXITS EVERYWHERE. SO ME AND PROBABLY 50 OTHER PEOPLE WERE JUST SPRINTING OUT THE DOORS. WELL, IN A STATEMENT, TARGET SAID THAT ALL GUESTS AND TEAM MEMBERS WERE SAFELY EVACUATED FROM THE STORE. THE TARGET AT 178TH AND WEST CENTER WILL REMAIN CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. SO, AGAIN, AT THIS HOUR, HERE’S WHAT WE KNOW. YEAH, A MAN ARMED WITH AN AR 15 STYLE RIFLE AND AMMUNITION STARTED SHOOTING INSIDE THE TARGET STORE AT 178TH AND WEST CENTER AROUND NOON. WITHIN 6 MINUTES, POLICE WERE ON SCENE AND HAD SHOT THE GUNMAN. POLICE FOUND NO ONE ELSE INJURED INSIDE THE STORE. THE IDENTITY OF THE GUNMAN IS NOT YET KNOWN TO US, NOR IS THERE ANY WORD OF ANY KIND OF MOTIVE. POLICE ESTIMATED THE GUNMAN IS A WHITE MAN IN HIS TWENTIES OR THIRTIES. NOW POLICE WANT TO HEAR FROM ANY WITNESSES WHO MAY HAVE BEEN IN THE AREA AT THE TIME. YOU CAN CONTACT INVESTIGATORS. THIS NUMBER, 402444 4877. AGAIN, IT’S NOT CLEAR HOW THE GUNMAN ENTERED THE STORE OR WHETHER HE DROVE THERE OR WAS DROPPED OFF. POLICE SAY THEY’LL HAVE TEAMS IN THE STORE FOR MOST OF THE NIGHT AND THEY WILL PROVIDE AN UPDATE. SO THAT PEOPLE CAN RETRIEVE THEIR VEHICLES OR ANY PERSONAL BELONGINGS THEY LEFT BEHIND. NOW, WE HAVE REACHED OUT TO OMAHA METRO JEAN STOTHERT SO FAR, SHE’S HAD NO COMMENT ON THIS INCIDENT TODAY IN SOUTHWEST OMAHA. WE’LL BE BACK AT 4:00 WITH KETV NEWSWATC
