A 28-year-old Haines City man was killed Sunday night when he hit the rear of a tractor-trailer that was stopped at a light on U.S. 27 in Dundee.

The crash happened about 9:20 p.m. just north of Dundee Road, also known as State Road 542. The Polk County Sheriff's Office said Michael Huggins, 28, of Haines City was traveling south on U.S. 27 in a 2008 Audi A6 when he approached a 2017 Volvo semi-tractor and trailer driven by Roel Avila Almaguer, 36, of Frostproof, from behind.

Almaguer's truck was stopped in traffic at a light, and the Sheriff's Office said that as Huggins approached from behind, he tried to swerve to the right to avoid a collision. The Audi’s driver side hit the rear passenger-side of the trailer, causing significant damage to the car, and fatal injuries to Huggins.

Deputies from the Sheriff's Office, along with Lake Hamilton police and Polk County Fire Rescue found Huggins dead when they arrived. Investigators said the trailer lighting was functional and had no defects.
