Leavenworth man sentenced for shooting another Kansas man in the leg

Antoine Courtney was convicted in less 30 minutes by the jury handling the case

Antoine Courtney, 30, of Leavenworth, Kansas, was sentenced to 41 months for aggravated battery after a two-day trial last month. Courtney was found guilty of shooting another Kansas man in the leg outside of a home in Leavenworth. On June 6, 2021, court records showed Courtney approached the victim outside a home in the 1000 block of Miami St. He is then believed to have pulled a gun on the victim, and the parties began to struggle over the firearm. The gun discharged, shooting the victim in the leg shattering his bone and causing him to undergo multiple surgeries. After shooting the victim, the defendant walked away from the area. The jury took less than a half-hour to convict. A previous trial was set for this case on October 3, 2022, but the defendant failed to appear.“A person’s sentence is determined by the Judge, and our sentencing guidelines established by the legislature. That’s how this sentence was determined." Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson said. " However, a crime like this has caused our victim multiple surgeries and medical issues that will long surpass this sentence. We’re grateful he’s doing well, and the help from the community that assured this conviction.”
