SHELBYVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – East Middle School in Shelby County is trying some new tricks in the education world.

On Tuesday and Thursdays, students prepare for their mid-morning skateboard club.

The students practice right outside of art teacher Zachary Hypes’ classroom.

Hypes said he believes the activity benefits students.

“If they can do it in skateboarding, they can apply those skills in the classroom and a bunch of other things,” Hypes said.

The school’s assistant principle also said she’s all for it.

“He’s really good about instructing them on what to do if you feel like you’re going to fall, and how to fall.”

Students listed benefits, including a better ability to focus and teaching patience.
