(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Gov. J.B. Pritzker was in Waukegan Monday at the College of Lake County’s Lakeshore Campus to commemorate the ribbon cutting of a new, 63,000-square-foot student center.
The addition to the campus is part of a $36 million investment through the Rebuild Illinois program.
“By combining state and local resources, we open doors for universities and colleges to embrace growth in new ways,” Pritzker said. “Thanks, in part, to these investments, the College of Lake County has been able to advance its lakeshore commitment.”
College of Lake Country President Lori Suddick said that, with the building's completion, “The college looks forward to advancing its efforts to have a vibrant urban campus to support students and the communities of Lake County."
Pritzker was wide eyed as he addressed those who attended the ceremony for the College.
“Students enter to find a gleaming welcome center to direct them where they go, with every option ranging from the testing center, to the library, the adult education hub, to the medical office assistant labs, nursing classrooms and a phlebotomy lab,” the governor said.
State Rep. Rita Mayfield, who was born and raised in Waukegan, could not help but applaud.
“Having taken classes in the original building — and for those of you who have taken classes, you know what I’m talking about — this is just a huge difference,” Mayfield said. “As I walked through this building, I was filled with emotion. I almost wanted to cry, it was just so beautiful. My first thought was: ‘I need to take another class.’”
She said the center will help enhance student life for years to some.
