Tony Khan Recently Changed His Booking Method And It’s Led To More Organization And Stability

Tony Khan says he’s more focused and organized with how he has been booking shows as of late.

WTF with Marc Maron welcomed Tony Khan to this week’s “Wrestling With Marc” bonus show, and Tony said that if fans have noticed more coherent and organized television shows, there’s a good reason for that. Khan revealed that he made a slight change in the way he books his shows, but it’s had a tremendous effect on AEW programming.

“Since Full Gear it’s probably been the most stable run of TV and maybe the best run of TV since the original Revolution that I was talking about, at the start of 2020,” Khan explained. “That was probably the last time where I strapped down and said I need to get organized and made a major change as big as the one I’ll show you [Tony takes out a notebook and explains it’s his booking notes]

“So the stuff you read, I would appreciate it if — I’m going to cover the future dates, but if you see just a bit of what’s on here — I had a process. I already had a schedule of what I had planned week to week in different stories for different wrestlers or different matches and segments. At some point, I just inverted it,” Khan said. “I realized I should tip this [chart] over and instead of looking at the dates and building it out, I flipped what the columns were and what the rows were. I put the columns where the rows were and now I organize everything like this since Full Gear and I feel like I’m more organized even though it’s all the same information. It’s just looks at it differently and it really helps me.”

Tony agreed that the top column in his chart focuses on the wrestlers and the stories, and you’re able to see the progression of the story on the chart. Khan said it’s like a mini storyboard and it’s been a boost, although he gave a large amount of credit to the performers themselves.

“I already was doing that and I kinda had that, but I had it the other way where it was looking at the shows and I had where the columns were, now here were the different wrestlers and different stories. But for some reason, and I don’t know why, it shouldn’t make that big of a difference flipping it like this. The flow working down the page like this looks a lot better, it works a lot better. It’s basically the same thing I was doing but like I said, flip the page around, and it’s helped me be even more organized with our shows. We had a great year of shows but like you said, I think the last few months it’s been better than ever. I attribute that to the great performances of the wrestlers mostly, and the fans coming to the fans, but also, I think a lot of it in part was we’ve been able to help the flow of the show in recent months by having a stable roster of wrestlers and that’s probably most of all, but then some small part I would attribute to being a little differently organized and having a different look at how to flow the show.”
