Rita Marie (Cillessen) Rinkenbaugh, 98, passed away on March 25, 2023 at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center surrounded by her very close family. Rita was born November 3, 1924 at home in Coffeyville to George H. and Mary (Molly) Cillessen. She spent most of her childhood days in Coffeyville. She attended Holy Name Catholic School, Roosevelt Junior High and Field Kindley Memorial High School, graduating in 1942. She graduated from St. Edwards Mercy School of Nursing in Fort Smith, AR, and returned to Coffeyville to begin her storied nursing career. She married Floyd J. Rinkenbaugh on June 21, 1952 at Holy Name Catholic Church, attended by her brother-in-law, Bernard Boehm, and sister, Betty Cillessen. Floyd died in 1985.

An incident that began last night continues this morning in the area of 4th and Carson, near the Lincoln-Central Elementary School in Cherryvale. According to the Montgomery County Chronicle, the individual made threatening comments toward school patrons, judges, and city personnel yesterday. There is also concern about the person's mental health. Cherryvale PD requests that everyone please avoid the area.

UPDATE: Standoff In Cherryvale Is Over

A lot has happened during the month of March involving the City of Coffeyville's Commission, Fire Department, City Manager and the citizens. A large group showed up to support the former fire chief at a commission meeting, a town hall was held in support of CFD and a picket by the fire union. City Manager Mark Hall, who is at the center of all of this, says all of those are their rights.

A thirteen-hour standoff that began last night has ended in the area of 4th and Carson, near the Lincoln-Central Elementary School in Cherryvale. According to the Montgomery County Chronicle, the individual made threatening comments toward school patrons, judges, and city personnel yesterday. There was also concern about the person's mental health. The Montgomery County Sheriff's Department says the man was taken into custody around 7:45 this morning.

Thirteen Hour Standoff In Cherryvale Ends Peacefully

Around 50 people attend a town hall in support of former Fire Chief Kenneth Ward ahead of a peaceful picket planned today. During the meeting held at the Coffeyville American Legion, Ward outlined what led up to his termination from the fire department and his desire to be rehired and finish his career in Coffeyville. Others spoke during the meeting including Captain Mike O' Connor in his capacity with the local firefighter's union, asking anyone who does show up to picket today to be peaceful, respectful and understand that citizens must respect the legal process the city has in place. O'Connor says he has been a part of the union for 16 years.

More information is known about the overnight standoff in Cherryvale. Tuesday evening, Cherryvale Police attempted to make contact with Aaron Whittley of Cherryvale, concerning an alleged theft at a convenience store. During the theft investigation, several social media posts Whittley made throughout the day were found, threatening multiple people, and making homicidal and suicidal statements. Considering Cherryvale's prior history with Whittley, and the homicidal comments, assistance was requested from the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department.
