PENSACOLA BEACH, Fla. -- Overcrowding, noise, parking and overflowing trash are just a few of the issues neighbors are complaining about on Pensacola Beach.
They say short-term rentals are causing the problems.
The group, Pensacola Beach Advocates, is working with Escambia County District 4 Commissioner Robert Bender on a draft ordinance.
State law prevents local governments from banning short-term rentals, but they can make some regulations.
Commissioner Bender says some of these short term rentals are being used as event venues.
“I understand they’re trying to allow short-term rentals. I don’t think it’s operating an event venue or space, so I believe that gets outside the realm of the short term rental,” Commissioner Bender said.
The draft ordinance would require homeowners to get a business tax receipt form the county if they market their property as event space.
Regulations are also included to address parking and overcrowding. For example, it says only two people should be allowed to stay in a bedroom.
The draft ordinance also says property owners would have to register their home as a short term rental and provide their contact information in the event they need to be contacted by the county or law enforcement if there’s an issue on the property.
Commissioner Bender says they don’t have a timeline on when the draft could move forward.
