DETROIT (WWJ) - Over 100 animals were seized by authorities from numerous properties in Detroit suspected of running dogfighting operations, organizers for a local nonprofit said on Monday.

Now rescue efforts continue with a call for donations to help the animals recover from their ordeal.

In what organizers believe is the largest operation to combat dogfighting in Michigan's history, Bark Nation said on social media that 133 dogs are now in their care after dozens of responders were deployed to assist in the large scale rescue.

The dogs were taken from multiple locations in Detroit after local, state and federal law enforcement officers served search warrants throughout the city.

"Bark Nation was the sole animal response agency involved with this case, and is providing daily care for the 133 dogs rescued," the nonprofit said in a Facebook update.

The group said the estimated cost post-seizure of the "massive life-saving operation" is a whopping $74,261.82, which includes treatment for sexual trauma, breeding complications and skin infections as well as testing and diagnostics, such as radiographs and Babesia and heartworm testing.

Bark Nation is the sole animal agency providing daily care for all the seized animals and receives no federal funding.

While the documentation and removal of the animals is complete, the rescue organization added that daily care, behavioral needs, nourishment plans, veterinary treatment, rehabilitation and more are still needed to provide the dogs with a chance at new life.

“The majority of the dogs rescued were found living outdoors, attached to heavy tow-style chains with minimal shelter from the elements," Bark Nation Director of Operations, Jessica Brown, wrote. "Many required immediate medical care for a variety of injuries and illnesses. We are hopeful all will recover successfully and be able to begin their life after dogfighting.”

Bark Nation said the average cost to get one animal back on their feet is just under $1,500.00. Financial support to help a single dog can greatly help the nonprofit's efforts to save lives.

"Please consider joining us in providing the most amazing lives for these 133 deserving survivors by donating today," the group added.
