The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a serious personal injury motor vehicle accident on Swamp Road in the Town of Smithfield.
Around 8 a.m. on Monday, January 30, Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the area of Swamp Road, north of Fearon Road in the Town of Smithfield, regarding a two-vehicle motor vehicle accident with a serious injury.
Police investigation showed that Timothy Stevens, 58, from Lincoln, NY, had been operating a vehicle on Swamp Road, when he crossed into the northbound driving lane, striking a vehicle operated by a 23-year-old woman from Earlville, NY.
The investigation further indicated that Stevens was under the influence of narcotics at the time of the collision.
Stevens was transported from the scene to Upstate University Hospital to receive treatment for injuries sustained in the collision. Stevens’ injuries are not considered to be life-threatening at this time. the other driver was not injured in the collision. Due to the accident Swamp Road was shut down for some time, and the road has since been reopened.
Following the police investigation into the collision, Stevens was issued uniform traffic tickets for Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, Unlicensed Operation, Failure to Keep Right, Uninspected Motor Vehicle, and Unreasonable Speed. Additionally, Stevens was issued an appearance ticket for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 7th degree. He is due to appear in the Town of Smithfield Court on February 28th, to answer the charges.
