Judgement day for two big-budget Channel 10 shows as the network makes a decision on the future of The Amazing Race and The Traitors

Channel 10 is remaining optimistic about the future of The Amazing Race Australia and The Traitors despite their disappointing ratings.

Paramount ANZ's Daniel Monaghan told TV Tonight they were keen to stand by the two shows due to their high quality and critical acclaim.

'The Traitors didn't set our world on fire last year, but it was such a well-made show…I think it deserves more attention,' he said.

Monaghan said The Traitors 'deserved more audience' and praised the production company for how it put the series together.

'I think when you put up something like The Traitors and it doesn't do as strong numbers as you think it deserves, you'd look at the quality of the show and think, "Can you grow it?"

'That’s what we will be evaluating…. particularly with the performance [of the UK series]. It deserves more.'

Monaghan said the same about The Amazing Race Australia, which has delivered decent but not overly impressive numbers for the network.

'The Amazing Race Australia is one of the biggest formats in the world. I think it's worth revisiting. We're certainly looking at it in the same way that we're looking at The Traitors,' he said.

The third Channel 10 season of The Amazing Race Australia premiered to 451,000 metro viewers last year.

Casting is currently underway for a second season of The Traitors despite the show's debut delivering middling ratings last October.

Last week, 10Play posted a call for contestants to 'play the ultimate game of strategy and deception'.

While the series has struggled in Australia, it's a blockbuster hit across Europe and has become a bona fide sensation in the UK and America.

The Aussie series also won critical acclaim, despite the fact few people watched it.

It was voted one of the best new shows of 2022 by industry blog TV Tonight and wowed viewers on social media.

'I don't understand why people are watching anything other than #TraitorsAU it is literally the best thing on TV right now,' one gushed.

'#TraitorsAU is the best show Channel 10 has offered,' tweeted another.

'#TraitorsAU One of the best reality TV shows. Very intelligent. It must return for a second season,' added one.

The UK version of the series, which aired on the BBC, has become the biggest reality TV hit since Love Island, with more than 3.2 million viewers tuning in for the finale.

British critics were impressed by the addictive series, with the Daily Mail's own Christopher Stevens calling it 'the best thing on TV for 20 years'.

American audiences have been similarly impressed after a semi-celebrity version debuted on streaming service Peacock earlier this month.

Starring a mix of civilians and stars, including Real Housewife Brandi Glanville and former Bachelor and Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte, the Alan Cumming-hosted series stunned viewers and television critics alike.

After the show blew up on social media, Peacock credited it with helping the service reach a subscriber milestone.

'Twenty million people have subscribed to Peacock. That's a lot of people watching The Traitors,' the platform's official Twitter account tweeted this week.

The nail-biting show, hosted by actor Rodger Corser in Australia, pits contestants against each other in a Cluedo-inspired castle or manor in a murder-filled game of betrayal.

The majority of contestants, the 'Faithfuls', must work out who amongst them are the 'Traitors'.

The show's psychological elements have hooked viewers, who tune in each week to see paranoid contestants frantically turn on each other in a frenzied bid to find the traitors before it's too late.

'Have you got what it takes to play the ultimate game of strategy and deception?

'Could your charm and powers of persuasion carry you to the finish line? What would you risk and how far would you go to win a life changing prize?'
