The Southern Oregon University women's basketball team is on a four-game win streak and hopes to reach the NAIA national tournament for the second straight season.
They'll do so led by a Eugene native who is part of a family full of athletes, and we traveled south to Ashland to bring you the story.
Kami Walk's presence at an SOU game can be seen both on the floor and on the stat sheet.
The Eugene native leads the Raiders in scoring and rebounding this season - a critical member of the team, just like she was during her days at Sheldon High School.
"In high school, I was going through so many knee surgeries, I just feel like I finally got healthy,” said Walk, a junior forward with the Raiders. “Coach CK has done a great job of helping me with my conditioning and it's really helped."
SOU won 29 games last season with Kami earning NAIA All-American honors for her play.
Her head coach puts it simply: Kami can do it all.
"[She’s] such a really smart leader and understands people,” said SOU head coach Carlotta Kloppenburg. “That's what's so important about being a leader; you have to know how to talk to certain people and how to reach people and she does a really good job of that."
Kami comes from quite the athletic family; both of her parents competed at the University of Oregon, as did her brother, Ryan, who just wrapped up a stellar college football career on the offensive line with the Ducks.
"Getting to see him play his final year at Oregon was amazing,” Kami told us. “It's kind of sad to see him go out of his college days but he's working towards his new goals and his new career. It's really great; he supports me just like I support him. I actually got a pre-game text from him today just wishing me good luck. It's really cool to have such a great support system."
Kami isn't the only Sheldon grad on the Raiders roster; sophomore Makayla Scurlock has started four games for SOU this season.
The Raiders will be playing in Eugene in a few weeks when Southern Oregon visits the Bushnell Beacons on Saturday, February 18.
