PHOENIX (AP) — The press secretary of Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs has resigned after a controversial social media post made in the wake of a fatal shooting at a Tennessee school. Gubernatorial spokesperson Josselyn Berry posted a tweet Monday night with an image of a woman holding pistols in each hand and the caption, “Us when we see transphobes.” The image was from the 1980 movie “Gloria.” The post was made hours after the shooting at a Christian school in Nashville that left three children and three adults dead. The shooter was killed by police and has been identified as a 28-year-old former student at The Covenant School who was transgender.  Berry’s post drew widespread criticism for appearing to promote gun violence. Twitter later removed the post with a notice saying it violated the platform’s rules.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — With his budget proposal under consideration by lawmakers, Gov. Josh Shapiro has toured the state to tout a financial incentive that he hopes will attract more people into Pennsylvania’s ranks of police officers, nurses and teachers, although many new recruits may not fully receive it because of how much they earn. The shortages of police officers, nurses and teachers are nationwide, and Shapiro earlier this month proposed the three-year tax credit of up to $2,500 a year for new recruits, a central plank in his effort to address the shortages in Pennsylvania. His office bills it as his “plans to Rebuild Pennsylvania’s Workforce.” In a news conference at the Mercyhurst Municipal Police Academy in Erie last Thursday, Shapiro described seeing 30 children in classrooms in Pittsburgh because of a lack of teachers. It’s hard for kids to learn and teachers to teach in that environment, he said.

(AP) — A career criminal whose rap sheet includes bank robberies and a murder conspiracy was sentenced Wednesday to 16 years in prison for killing a New Jersey political consultant in exchange for money in 2014. George Bratsenis, 74, pleaded guilty a year ago to a charge that he and another man accepted thousands of dollars from another political consultant, Sean Caddle, in exchange for killing Michael Galdieri. Galdieri was stabbed to death in his Jersey City apartment, which was then set on fire. U.S. District Judge John Michael Vazquez imposed the 16-year sentence plus five years of supervised release on Wednesday in federal court in Newark. A man who served time in a New Jersey prison with Bratsenis in the early 2000s, Bomani Africa, also pleaded guilty in the killing and was sentenced last month to 20 years. He named Bratsenis as the accomplice who helped kill Galdieri.
