The city says the intersection of Harry Wurzbach and Austin Highway has been a "traffic headache" for years now.
The new design, called a Single Point Urban Interchange, or SPUI, is the first of its kind in San Antonio. There are only a handful across Texas, and only about 60 total across the country, officials say.
City spokesperson Laura Mayes says this design was chosen to free up the flow of traffic in this problematic area.
"Because of the way it's designed, it reduces crash points and allows cars to just move more effectively," Mayes said.
A SPUI allows traffic to be controlled from a single set of signals.
