Pieces of plastic, shattered glass and balloons mark where police said a woman crashed her car after being shot in a fatal shooting near the Upton Metro Station over the weekend.
The impact injured two children, a 3-year-old and a 2-month-old who police said were also inside the car at the time of the shooting.
"It's heartbreaking," said Joe Johnson, who lives in Upton.
The Baltimore Police Department was still in the process Monday of piecing together who opened fire on Pennsylvania Avenue and Laurens Street Saturday evening, and why.
"A gunman or multiple gunman opened fire. We do not know if the intended targets were the people in the vehicle or the individuals who were on the sidewalk," said BPD Commissioner Michael Harrison, at the scene Saturday.
In addition to the woman and two children, police said two men who were standing on the sidewalk were shot.
One of those victims, a 43-year-old man was killed.
Early Monday, Mayor Brandon Scott was questioned on any developments in the shooting.
"The investigation is still on-going. We’re going to continue doing what we do. We have the best detectives in the world. When they find these people we will turn them over to the other parts of the justice system," the Mayor said.
People in the Upton community expressed they were fed up with the crime they believe is heavily fueled by drugs.
"Unfortunately violence comes with the drugs," said one couple.
"Young people don’t care," said another neighbor.
In a recent Maryland's Most Wanted report, detectives, in court documents described Upton as "a violent crime area and open-air drug market."
The neighborhood is known to be very dangerous," said Al Maresca, Deputy Marshals with the US Marshals Service, during a MMW report.
Online crime statistics show there have been more than 400 (411) crimes reported in the Upton neighborhood within the past year including 114 aggravated assaults, nearly 30 robberies, more than two dozens shootings and several homicides.
"I just want this to stop. I know they’re overwhelmed," said Joe Johnson, who says he lives in Upton.
There are multiple cameras visible in that area.
Commissioner Harrison said Saturday the Department was reviewing any area surveillance.
The Department has not yet said if the footage produced any evidence nor provided any suspect information.
At last check, the second man shot sustained non-life threatening injuries.
The woman and one child were last listed in critical condition, and the second child described as "stabilized."
The Department has not yet identified the man who was killed.
