Margie Marie Dawson Benedict, 91, of Cunningham, TN passed away on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, at her home while surrounded by her family.
Margie was born on July 20, 1931, in Clarksville, TN to the late John Franklin and Aletha Cotton Dawson. Margie worked in Southgate, Michigan for over 40 years serving as deputy treasurer of the city for many years and as president of the Municipal Employees Union. She was an avid reader and an ardent sports fan, with a particular enthusiasm for Detroit’s hockey and baseball teams.
She is preceded in death by her sisters, Pearl Atkins and Irene Dickson. Survivors include her children, Susan Wallace and Jimmy (Debbie) Shelton; grandchildren, Jessica McKay, Jeremy Shelton, Kimberly Shelton, Kyle (Day) Shelton and Ty Shelton; 14 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
The family would like to thank Margie’s neighbors, Kim and Brian Taylor, Regina and Ronnie Brown, Mike McWhorter, and the late Janet McWhorter for the many kindnesses they’ve shown her over the past 30 years. Her retirement years were happier because of them. And a special thank you to Cindy Wheeler for her help and support.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday February 4, 2023, at the old Lone Oak Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Harvey Cemetery.
A gathering of friends and family will be held Saturday from 12 noon until the hour of service at the church.
