The caption for the photograph on the cover of the March 18 issue of the Burbank Leader is incorrect. The photograph shows the Cascades of the Los Angeles Aqueduct in Sylmar. The water that is carried in the Los Angeles Aqueduct has been conveyed from the Owens Valley in the Eastern Sierra Nevada and is used solely by residents of the city of Los Angeles. California State Water Project water is not conveyed in the Los Angeles Aqueduct.

A $25,000 check from the Rotary Club of San Marino was presented to the San Marino Unified School District School Board at its recent meeting. The money will purchase 40 specially equipped iPads that will be used for a cutting-edge medical arts curriculum at the high school. This type of program is normally found only in colleges but the SMUSD wants to give interested students a leg up in their medical career path, be it pre-med or nursing.

The city of Glendale and Mark Thomas, a civil engineering firm, held a public comment session Thursday to get feedback on the San Fernando Road Beautification Project. The plan aims to add green space and make other improvements to San Fernando Road, a main thoroughfare between Glendale and Burbank, and create a safer route for pedestrians, drivers, bicyclists and public transit users.

The Huntington Middle School and San Marino High School choirs gathered family and friends for a joint concert titled, “All That Hath Life and Breath.”. The show, conducted by Derek Jamieson and with collaborative pianist Connie Washburn, celebrated “the culmination of months of hard work learning our most challenging repertoire of the year.”

The Chinese Club of San Marino held its annual Installation party to introduce its new officers. The new board directors include Peter Koh, who served as a trustee of the San Marino School Foundation for six years and was the foundation’s first-ever Chinese American president in 2015-16; Tim Wong, who is currently the president of the Southern California Dental Association; Dr. Se-Yao Hsu, who served as president of the Chinese Club of San Marino in 1999, principal of Chinese School in 2001 and San Marino planning commission from 2008 to 2020; Theresa Chiang, former principal of Chinese School of San Marino in 2016-17; and Hsu and Chiang are former directors who have come back to serve again. Finally, a second generation of San Marino residents was represented by Edith Lai, who is currently the public relations liaison of the Los Angeles County Government Fire Department; and Patric Pan, a law and computer science expert.

Not surprisingly, the Burbank City Council has decided to delay the implementation of an ordinance that would ban the use or distribution of single-use plastic straws and utensils made of polystyrene in order get more input from the businesses that are most responsible for the proliferation of items that are one of the main contributors to the degradation of our planet and, subsequently, the health of our people and wildlife.
