Orchard Park, N.Y. (WGR 550) - The NFL has informed teams on Monday the 2023 salary cap will be $224.8 million per-club, according to both Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane told the media at his end-of-season press conference last week the club already has over $240 million in salary cap dollars committed to next year. That means the Bills are over the ceiling by roughly $20 million.
All teams will have to be under the $224.8 million figure by 4 p.m. ET on March 15. While each team will be allowed a 90-man roster beginning at that time and through training camp, only their top-51 salary cap hits count during the offseason.
"We're going to have to work to get under the cap so that we can operate next year," Beane said. "We're going to be creative. We're going to try and win... we're going to put as strong a team as we can out there and hopefully we're hosting [playoff] games next year. That's the goal."
With that goal in mind and the salary cap number now known, Beane and his staff have plenty of work to do, including evaluating and deciding what to do about their own pending free agents. The Bills have 21 players set to become unrestricted free agents this offseason, and three more who will be restricted, giving them the option to retain their rights with certain levels of salary offers.
