MILWAUKEE — Be careful where you park in Milwaukee on Monday night.

The City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works said it will continue its snow emergency through Tuesday morning.

Where can I park?

During a snow emergency, no one can park on main streets from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Alternate side parking will be in effect on side streets from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. To view a map of restricted parking, click here.

On Monday night, all drivers who park on a Milwaukee side street must move vehicles to the even numbered side of the street no later than 10 p.m.

All parked vehicles need to be “flush to the curb and out of the flow of traffic,” including the streetcar route and other roadways.

City officials noted that any posted street signs take precedence and encouraged drivers to read all street signs for winter parking instructions before they pick their spot.

City officials previously said as of Jan. 31 at 7 p.m., some Milwaukee Public School parking lots will be available to the public during snow emergencies. However, DPW issued a new statement clarifying those lots will be available starting Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. Click here for available locations.

What happens if I violate the rules?

If you violate the snow emergency parking rules, you can be cited $50 for a first offense, $100 for a second and $150 for a third. Your car could be towed starting on the third offense, according to DPW. DPW said it issued 2,073 citations from Sunday night into the early hours of Monday morning for snow emergency violations.

"Towing can occur for reasons such as complaint of private property, blocking or obstructing. For example, someone is parked in front of your driveway," a DPW spokesperson said. "Considering this is the first snow emergency of the winter, we did not tow any vehicles [on Sunday night] for [having three or more snow emergency violations in the winter season]."

If your car is towed, you must bring a valid driver's license to the two lot. If you do not have a driver's license, you must bring a valid, state-issued photo ID and bring someone with you who has a valid driver's license. Additionally, you must show proof of calid vehicle liability insurance. If someone else is going to pick up your car for you, they must have the vehicle title, a valid driver's license and a noterized letter from the owner authorizing them to take the car. The letter should include the color, make, model, VIN, license plate number and tow number of the vehicle.

Towing fees start at $105. The fees must be paid in full before you can take your car back. Personal checks are not accepted, but you can pay with cash, a money order for the exact amount due, a cashier's check for the exact amount due, a Visa of Mastercard.

The tow lot is located at 3811 West Lincoln Ave. in Milwaukee. The lot is open Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The lot is closed on Sundays.
