Syracuse, N.Y. — A woman and her husband were sleeping when they heard yelling early Monday morning and rushed outside to see a woman standing on a garage roof with heavy smoke coming from the home.

The woman was yelling that her house was on fire.

Syracuse firefighters used ladders to rescue the woman from the roof at 917 Valley Drive, according to a news release Monday from the Syracuse Fire Department.

The woman was taken to Upstate University Hospital for smoke inhalation, authorities said. Her condition is unknown, they said.

Darian Shuker said she awoke to her dog barking, who was reacting to the yelling outside. She said she called 911, not knowing that a fire erupted in her neighbors home. When her husband saw the smoke, he told her to let 911 operators that the home was on fire.

Syracuse firefighters responded to the call around 2:08 a.m.

Firefighters found heavy flames and dense smoke coming from the first floor of the two-story home. It took firefighters 20 minutes to put out the flames and 40 minutes to extinguish hotspots, they said.

Firefighters said the fire started in the kitchen, but the cause is still under investigation.

Shuker said the woman’s bedroom was next to the garage where the woman stood yelling for help. She said it was an emotional moment for her.

“It was scary, and it’s not the first house fire in this area,” Shuker said. “It’s a bit heavy, it never feels good to see someone have to go through that.”

The fire was just two blocks from a fire in early November.

Clifford Ryan, the founder and vice chair of OGs Against Violence, lost his home and nearly everything inside when a kitchen fire spread throughout his home at 133 Bradford St.

Shuker said the fires make her think about keeping fire alarms up to date. She and her husband were planning check the alarms today.
