A man who allegedly told a woman that her newborn baby had no pulse, part of a series of events that led to a search for the baby and charges being filed against the mother, will remain in jail for now.
Alexandra Eckersley gave birth to the baby boy in 15-degree weather the day after Christmas in a tent in Manchester. Her boyfriend, George Theberge, is charged with endangering the welfare of a child, reckless conduct and witness tampering.
Investigators said Eckersley told first responders that Theberge told her the baby didn't have a pulse. When the baby was eventually found, he was alive and was taken to a hospital. The baby is said to be doing well.
Theberge was taken to the courthouse for Monday's hearing, but he never appeared in court after his attorneys decided it wasn’t necessary.
There are a number of outstanding cases against Theberge, and he's also being held on a probation violation from a previous case.
Defense attorneys said they hope to get Theberge released from preventative detention.
"Our plan is to get him into an inpatient rehab and then file a motion to amend bail to allow him to go to that program," said defense attorney Dan Duckett.
Prosecutors said they will seek to keep Theberge detained.
"The state will be objecting to any bail motion that comes forward," said Assistant Hillsborough County Attorney Alexander Gatzoulis.
The judge told prosecutors that at the next hearing, she expects them to offer a plea bargain that will encompass all the cases. The prosecution said that's their intention.
The next hearing is expected to happen in March.
