I have deep roots in the South Fork of the Eel River. Members of my family go back to 1857. I had the opportunity to listen to many stories about the people of one of  the valleys, Long Valley in Laytonville.

The valley was scattered widely with small farms like Ol’ MacDonald’s farm. Every farm had a variety of animals, cows chickens, pigs ducks, etc., and, of course the required dogs. Every farm had a large garden with the variety of vegetables, and a lot of root crops to make it through the winter. My Grandfather was the manager of one of the largest ranches in the valley. It was owned by his uncles who owned a large sausage factory in San Francisco.

The ranch had the only tractor in the valley, they also had plows, hay rakes, a bailer and other attachments. He was very generous in helping his neighbors and of course they were always more than glad to help him.

Because the valley was so sparsely populated, they all had to work together on any major project. When a farmer’s sheep or cattle needed to be rounded-up, the whole valley joined in. The same with crop harvesting, bringing in the hay, picking the fruit trees, and so forth.

Barn raising was always done as a joint effort. Every able-bodied person in the valley would join-in to help put up a barn. It was always the largest project that they would take on.

The aftermath of a Barn Raising required a follow-up with a huge potluck party. My grandfathers and grandmothers never talked about how much work it was, but always remembered all the great barns they built, and especially the great parties when the work was done.

If you want to share in that great feeling, help Friends of the Garberville Fire Dept. build a new expanded fire district. Vote yes on “Measure U”. We need your help! Start planning the party.

To those who hate paying unfair Taxes. (Including me!) We have already been taxed by Humboldt County over $270,000.00 per year for fire protection in the proposed new district. They put it in their General Fund, and they use it for whatever they want.

Let that sink in.

Got it?

The reason that the district has not already been formed is because the county refused to give the tax back. They have collected that tax for years, and years, and years. The County still will not return all the tax, but they have agreed to give 75% of it back, ($202,789.00), if we would put it on a ballot, and add a supplemental parcel tax amounting to $147,550.00. That requires a 2/3 majority vote to pass. That is a very steep hill to climb.

If the “MEASURE-U” issue doesn’t pass, they will continue to keep the money that you already pay!

The County already has their own financial problems as you might guess. But, not to worry the Board of Supervisors are on our side and want MEASURE-U to pass. 2nd District Supervisor Michelle Bushnell is solidly for the new expanded district.
Local businesses should consider what they pay for fire insurance and think about what might happen if the fire department ratings drop, or are unable to protect our local area adequately.

  • It is estimated that the Tax Exchange Agreement will generate approximately $200,000 per year to support fire services. This will be in addition to the property tax already received from parcels from within the existing district and what could be generated from the proposed special tax.
  • Initial estimates indicate that, if approved by registered voters, the special tax will generate nearly $145,000 per year in revenue.

I’m confused does it raise my property tax again Or does it make the tax already collected used more locally?

You get taxes that you already pay back. Also another tax is also added.
Only read the bold print above.

Some people seem to be concerned about how the tax will effect to the new SoHum hospital. It won’t. The hospital is a special district of the county. They don’t pay taxes, they receive them.

This is well worth it. The taxes are small compared to the cost of replacing a home, even after insurance.

The firefighters are volunteers, they give many hours of their time to help their community as well as paying taxes too. Support those that are protecting you, vote yes!
