Snow is an undeniable part of living in Michigan. Every winter we see feet upon feet of the white stuff, and for the most part we are able to just go about our days despite it, unlike our southern counterparts.

And that's all thanks to the fantastic work of our local and state road crews, who work tirelessly to make sure snow is removed, and stays off, our roadways even during the deepest of snows.

But can I take a second and maybe be slightly ungrateful for how efficient our road crews are in Grand Rapids?

I know, it sounds insane. But last night, at 12:45am I was woken up by loud rumbling, flashing lights, and my dog losing her mind at what she must assume is world war three starting outside of our home in the middle of the night.

And while one pass of the snow plow would have been annoying but ignorable, it took four passes for them to "clear" my street, which looked basically the same as it did when I went to bed.

They've been so efficient throughout the week of taking care of the roads as the snow accumulates, that we weren't in a major "need" of a plowing. In fact, I considered that my Honda Accord was able to get out and about Sunday morning without getting stuck, so it must be in decent shape.

So while I would love to applaud the countless hours behind the wheel our publics works employees are doing, I wish they'd get some sleep when I do. Or at least focus on the big main roads. We tell train operators not to sound their horns in neighborhoods overnight, why wouldn't we ask the same of snow plows on non-essential streets?

There is currently no residential curfew for public works vehicles, and maybe there never will be. But I'm begging you... the snow can wait until the next morning. Me and my dog  (and our need for sleep) thank you.
