Spartan Women Fall at No. 22/22 Illinois Sunday

Michigan State has four in double figures in the loss.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -  Despite four players reaching double figures Michigan State women's basketball dropped a tough 86-76 battle to No. 22/22 Illinois Sunday afternoon at the State Farm Center.

The Spartans played without head coach Suzy Merchant who missed the game due to a medical incident.

The loss snapped a 10-game winning streak to Illinois, as MSU falls to 11-0 overall and 3-7 in Big Ten action. Illinois improves to 17-5 overall and 7-4 in league contests.

Four Spartans reached double figures led by 23 points from graduate guard Kamaria McDaniel, which was her sixth 20-point game of the season. Sophomore guard DeeDee Hagemann was near a double-double with 10 points and eight assists, tying her season-high in helpers. Off the bench, senior forward Taiyier Parks scored 13 points with five rebounds, while senior guard Moira Joiner had 11 points and six boards.

Illinois was led by 26 points from Makira Cook with Genesis Bryant adding 21. 

After a McDaniel trey, the Spartans took their first lead of the game 9-8 with under five left in the first quarter. There was little stoppage of play in the first period with the media timeout coming with 1:57 remaining. Michigan State held Illinois without a basket for the final 2:25, as it ended the quarter hitting one of its last seven. Hagemann led the way early on with seven points in the first stanza.

In the second quarter, Illinois used an 8-0 run to re-take the lead 26-22 with just over five minutes left in the half. Freshman guard Abbey Kimball snapped an over four minute scoring drought to cut the deficit to four. The Illini used 9-0 run to re-establish a double-digit lead, 37-25, leading to a Spartan timeout. Hagemann and McDaniel led the way in the first half with seven points each. But the Illini out-scored the Spartans 24-13 in the second period to lead 37-29 at the break.

Michigan State continued to battle using a 7-0 run to cut it to a 51-48 deficit with under four minutes left in the third quarter. The Illini responded with 6-0 run over 1:12 to stretch its lead to eight points. MSU went cold at the end of the quarter going 0-for-4 to end the period, trailing 61-52.

The Illini scored the first five points of the fourth period to pull away for good. Michigan State did not stop fighting using a 7-0 run to make cut it to a 70-63 game, but Cook snapped the run with a jumper. Illinois went on to take care of business from the free throw line down the stretch to seal the win. The Illini went 10-for-10 from the charity stripe in the victory.

The Spartans will remain on the road, facing Nebraska on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 8:30 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.

Michigan State Women's Basketball Post-Game Notes: vs. Illinois

• Despite having its 10-game win streak in the series halted with Sunday's loss, Michigan State still leads the all-time series with Illinois, 46-29, and MSU also still holds an 18-16 lead in games played in Champaign, suffering its first loss there since 2007, snapping a nine-game win streak as the visiting team in the series.

• Michigan State's starting line-up of graduate guard Kamaria McDaniel, sophomore guard DeeDee Hagemann, sophomore guard/forward Matilda Ekh, senior guard Moira Joiner and sophomore forward Isaline Alexander was the Spartans' second game with that starting five and are now 1-1 with that line-up to open the game ... overall, it was one of MSU's seven different line-ups this season.

• MSU had four players in double-figure scoring for the eighth time this season and after winning their first time games when doing so, the Spartans have loss two of the last three occurrences as they are going 6-2 when four score in double-digits.

• Graduate guard Kamaria McDaniel netted a team-leading 23 points Sunday to post her sixth 20-point game of the season, including the second in last three games ... it was McDaniel's 16th double-figure scoring outing, as well as topping the team in scoring for the team-best eighth game, including three times in the last four games ... McDaniel also led the Green & White with three steals, marking the third time in four games that she topped the team in steals or shared the lead, as part of the fifth total time this season.

• Senior forward Taiyier Parks posted her second-straight double-figure scoring outing with 13 points off the bench, part of her seventh double-digit scoring game this season and 30th of her career.

• Senior guard Moira Joiner notched 11 points for her third-consecutive game in double-figures as part of five times in the last six games, with 12 double-figure scoring games on the season and 26th of her career ... Joiner also led MSU in rebounding with six boards Sunday, marking the third time this season and ninth time in her career.

• Sophomore guard DeeDee Hagemann notched 10 points and dished out a game-best eight assists, tying her season-high for the second-straight game and third time overall this season ... Hagemann led MSU in assists for the 14th time this season and 28th time in her career ... the 10 points was also Hagemann's first double-digit scoring outing in the last four games as part of the sixth total time this season and 15th of her career.
