Frigid temperatures will greet Portland/Vancouver residents as they wake Monday morning. But clear skies will help temps rise above freezing later in the day.
The National Weather Service in Portland pointed out that not one location in its district was above freezing as of 2 a.m. Monday. Metro weather stations were reporting temps ranging from the high teens to the high 20s as of 5 a.m.
Portland’s cold weather should begin to mitigate as the strong ridge of high pressure keeping the clouds at bay and the air dry at the surface begins to move eastward by midweek.
Monday will start clear and cold. Afternoon sunshine should help temperatures rise to about 39 degrees for the day’s high. Winds will be light at 5-8 mph. Locations in the central and southern Willamette Valley may see temperatures warm into the 40s. A light cloud cover is expected to begin to move into the region by the evening commute.
Early Tuesday will be cold again with lows in the mid 20s likely. No fog is expected as the dry air is keeping dew points extremely low, in the 5-15 deg range, according to the weather service.
Portland will see mostly cloudy skies during the day, and a high temperature reaching about 41 degrees.
Cloudy skies continue Wednesday with some chance of a sun break or two. If the sun does show up by the afternoon, temperatures could warm to the upper 40s. The forecast is calling for a high of about 43 if skies remain cloudy. No rain is expected.
Extended forecasts show the first chance of rain this week on Thursday. If rain does arrive it will be late in the afternoon. Better chances of rain arrive Friday.
