The legacy of a Routt student who died tragically this past December is living on through gifts from the surrounding community and through a new memorial. Last Friday, on what would have been Kelly Peters’ 17th birthday, the Routt community and Peters’ family gathered on the front lawn of Routt Catholic High School for a flag raising ceremony hosted by the Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network.

Plans for the removal of a time capsule from the grounds of a state institution in Jacksonville are on hold for now. The Jacksonville Area Museum is planning to salvage a number of key items from JDC for preservation. Items include the time capsule that was buried on the grounds in 1997 just southwest of the Gillette Building.

In baseball, Routt dropped Riverton 13-3 in 5 innings, Pittsfield thumped Carrollton 15-1, North Greene lost to Griggsville Perry 4-1, Carlinville shut down Auburn 15-0, North Mac stopped Nokimis 10-5, and New Berlin clipped Triopia 7-3.

The City of Winchester’s updates to its water system is moving along after some recent mandates from the federal government. In February, the city received both a low-interest loan and a grant totaling almost $3.4 million for the city’s water system improvement. The city was in the middle of preliminary work on updates to the system, and Mayor Rex McIntire says that’s when the federal mandates came down about work that needed to be done immediately: “We were getting ready to start on our water main replacement project, doing the preliminary work and helping the engineers from Benton & Associates with the design. We had to do a lot of locations of utilities and things like that so that they could better design the project. In the meantime, we had mandates come down about lead water service lines. Just recently, we leased a VAC truck in order to go through the different areas in town. We’ve got a little over 800 service lines that we’re having to locate and expose with the VAC truck to see what kind of materials we have going on those service lines. If they are lead service lines or galvanized, they will have to be replaced all the way to the residence.”

Winchester Water System Upgrades Moving Forward

Jacksonville School District 117’s fund balances appear to be running at a surplus. Superintendent Steve Ptacek says that the balance is up over $6 million at this time: “We have been up between $6-6.5 million this year compared to last year. Last year, we were up $3-4 million. That’s all good news, especially with the year that we drastically increased our expenditures due to salaries, which we needed to, so that absolutely our staff at this time needed to be paid higher. We were anticipating a potential to break even or slight loss [in the budget]. Being up $6 million is really a positive sign that we can do some other projects and upgrades.”

Beardstown Schools were placed on a soft lock down at mid-day today after local authorities searched for an armed suspect. According to a report from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, at 11:58AM, the Beardstown Police and Cass County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to the 1300 block of Jackson Street in Beardstown for a man running with a weapon. Cass County Sheriff Devron Ohrn says in the release that due to the close proximity to schools and school-aged children, the schools were contacted to be placed on lock down. The incident was about 3/4 of a mile west of the Beardstown Jr./Sr. High School.

The defense attorney of an EMT accused of first-degree murder in Springfield is again asking for his client’s bond to be reduced. The State Journal-Register reports that W. Scott Hanken, who represents Peggy J. Finley, filed an amended motion on Friday saying that statements made by the Earl Moore, Jr. family attorney Jennifer Hightower in court during a February 6th bond reduction hearing should be stricken from the record saying the statements were “highly improper, unsupported by law, and completely out of the scope of (the Crime Victims Bill of Rights).”

A Beardstown man is heading to prison after multiple arrests over the last month. 19 year old Mayout Dhal pleaded guilty to one count of robbery yesterday in Cass County Circuit Court. Dhal was arrested by members of the Beardstown Police and Cass County Sheriff’s Department on March 13th on the charge along with a charge of aggravated battery to a juvenile under the age of 13 causing great bodily harm.

Jacksonville Police and LifeStar EMS were paged out to a building strike at Top Shelf Liquor at approximately 9:30 am. According to a report by Jacksonville Police, 61-year-old Diane E. Vincent of Roodhouse told officers she felt a medical event coming on while behind the wheel of her white SUV and turned off Lincoln Avenue into the parking lot of Top Shelf Liquor in the 1200 block of West Morton Avenue.
