People gathered in downtown Dallas on Sunday to protest two bills filed in the Texas State Senate. The measures, if passed, would block citizens of China, Russia, North Korea and Iran from purchasing real estate in Texas.

The ban would apply to homes and agricultural land and would also affect companies headquartered in those foreign countries.

The demonstration at JFK Memorial Plaza in Dallas was organized by the DFW Chinese Alliance. Several local elected officials joined with the demonstrators to criticize the bills.

“The American dream should be for all Americans, and Chinese-Americans are included in that American dream,” said State Rep. Carl Sherman, D-DeSoto. “We need not go back a hundred years to when Chinese-Americans  could not buy property in this country, they could not own a business in Texas, they could not even get married.”

The bills are SB 147 and SB 552.
