Date set for Logan Clegg trial as defendant waives arraignment in killings of Concord couple
CHANCE TO TELL THE COURT HIS SIDE. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME WE ARE SEEING LOGAN CLEGG IN PERSON SINCE HIS OCTOBER ARREST. HE SAT QUIETLY IN HANDCUFFS AS THE DEFENSE AND PROSECUTION DISCUSSED THE CASE AGAINST HIM. THIS IS A MATTER OF STATE VERSUS LOGAN CLEGG. WE’RE SCHEDULED FOR AN ARRAIGNMENT AND DISPOSITION CONFERENCE, AND MR. CLEGG’S CASE. CLEGG WAIVED HIS ARRAIGNMENT MONDAY MORNING. HE IS ACCUSED OF SHOOTING AND KILLING STEVEN AND WENDY REED OF CONCORD AS THE TWO WERE OUT FOR AN AFTERNOON WALK ON A CITY TRAIL BACK IN APRIL, ALONG WITH SECOND DEGREE MURDER. CLEGG IS ALSO CHARGED WITH THREE COUNTS OF FALSE DEFYING, PHYSICAL EVIDENCE FOR ALLEGEDLY MOVING IN, CONCEALING THE REED’S BODIES AND FOR ALLEGEDLY BURNING HIS TENT IN CAMPSITES AFTER THEIR DEATHS. DURING HIS HEARING, PROSECUTORS FILED A MOTION TO UNSEAL THE AFFIDAVIT IN THIS CASE. BUT CLEGG’S ATTORNEY, CAROLINE SMITH, SAYS IT SHOULD REMAIN SEALED. THIS IS ESSENTIALLY A ONE SIDED SUMMARY OF THE STATE’S BEST CASE OR LAW ENFORCEMENT ITS BEST CASE. SMITH SAYS IN FAIRNESS TO HER CLIENT, THE INFORMATION SHOULD BE SAVED FOR WHEN CLEGG CAN RESPOND DURING TRIAL. WE ARE TALKING ABOUT AN INVESTIGATORY TOOL THAT BRINGS THE DEFENDANT TO TRIAL, AND THAT’S WHERE THE INFORMATION SHOULD COME OUT. NO DECISION FROM THE JUDGE TONIGHT ABOUT THAT AFFIDAVIT. IN THE MEANTIME, CLEGG IS STILL BEING HELD WITHOUT BAIL.

Although Clegg waived his arraignment, he still appeared in court as attorneys on both sides discussed the affidavit in the case.

The state filed a motion to unseal the document, but Clegg's attorney objected, saying the affidavit itself has nothing to do with court proceedings.

"We are talking about an investigative tool that brings the defendant to trial, and that's where the information should come out," said defense attorney Caroline Smith.

The judge is taking the defense's request under advisement.

Investigators said the Reids were killed on April 18, 2022. According to court documents, police said a witness saw a man fitting Clegg's description in the area where the couple's bodies were found after hearing gunshots the day they were killed.

Clegg was arrested at a library in Vermont on Oct. 28 on a fugitive from justice charge out of Utah. Prosecutors said that charge was dropped in favor of the New Hampshire charges. During a search of his campsite in Vermont, court records show, detectives found a Glock 17 handgun and ammunition. Lab testing determined the gun was the source of the spent shell casing recovered from the Concord crime scene, investigators said.

Clegg is facing second-degree murder charges in the killings. He is also charged with three counts of falsifying physical evidence for allegedly moving and concealing Stephen and Wendy Reid's bodies and for allegedly burning his tent and campsite after the couple's deaths.
