LOGAN, Utah (KUTV) — Two school districts and one school in northern Utah will be starting late on Monday, Jan. 30, as the area is expected to experience dangerously cold wind chill.
And the Box Elder County School District, which originally announced Sunday that a 2-hour delay was in place for Monday morning, had to make a change of plans as drifting snow caused even more problems on what was the coldest day of 2023 so far.
District officials said students would be meeting virtually Monday, and schools will be contacting parents and guardians with further instructions.
Cache County School District and Logan City School District will be starting two hours late because of weather conditions. Dugway School in Tooele County will also have a late start.
Utah State University also announced that classes on the Logan, Brigham City and Tremonton campuses that begin before 10 a.m. will be canceled. Classes beginning at 10:30 a.m. will proceed as regularly scheduled, and USU offices will be closed on these campuses until 10 a.m.
All remaining districts are conducting class as scheduled, according to public information. However, not all districts make public notifications of delays and closures. If you're uncertain whether your student's school is deviating from its regular schedule, you can find contact information for your specific district at schools.utah.gov.
School officials in Cache County said they will utilize a two-hour delay to provide more time in the morning to ensure roads are cleared and buses will run.
All buses will also run exactly two hours later than normal. Officials said there will be no morning preschool or kindergarten, and schools will dismiss at a regular time.
"We encourage parents to also take actions as appropriate to respond to cold weather conditions, such as dressing children warmly, driving children to bus stops, etc.," school officials said. "We live in a large valley and conditions can vary widely, so family based decisions are important as colder temperatures are going to be with us for at least a few days."
Schools in Box Elder County will hold remote classes Monday.
According to the district's website, students will be able to access all their assignments after 10 a.m., and schools will be in touch with parents and guardians with specific and further details.
Athenian Academy will be canceled for the day.
Logan City School District will operate two hours later than normal on Monday due to quickly dropping temperatures.
Officials said the decision was made after consulting with the Cache County School District Transportation Department.
They said buses will run their normal routes, but on a delayed schedule. Lunch will be served at schools as usual, and breakfast will be available as needed.
Students will leave at the normal time.
School officials said half-day kindergarten sessions and preschool sessions will be canceled, while full-day kindergarten classes will be held with the same delayed start as other classes.
"Even with the delayed start, please give yourself a little extra time to get to schools, and be safe on the roads!" they said. "Dress warm!"
In Tooele County, Dugway School will be the only school operating with a two-hour delay because of weather.
All other schools in the Tooele County School District will operate at their regular time.
