Five area teams earn No. 1 spots as OHSAA girls basketball district seedings are released

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Five area girls basketball teams have been awarded the top seed in their respective divisions for the upcoming OHSAA postseason basketball tournament.

Solon was named the top seed on the east side of Division I, and Olmsted Falls was the top seed of the west.

In Division II, Copley was awarded the top seed on the west side.

Laurel was named the top seed in the east in Division III, and Richmond Heights was awarded the top seed in the west in Division IV.

All participating coaches voted on the seeds earlier this week and the draw meeting was held Sunday afternoon. All brackets are available on the OHSAA website.

At this point, the districts are only identified by number, as in Northeast 1, Northeast 2, ETC. The district sites are listed by the OHSAA, but as of Sunday night the specific brackets hadn’t been assigned to the specific sites.

DIVISION I

The three Division I districts from the east side will feed into the Medina Regional along with Northeast 4 from the west side.

Northeast 5 and Northeast 6 will go to the Sandusky regional with two district winners from Northwest Ohio.

Taking a quick look at the brackets, in Division I, Solon is in Northeast 3, with the other top seeds being No. 8 Uniontown Lake, No. 10 Massillon Jackson and No. 12 Louisville.

Olmsted Falls is in Northeast 5, along with No. 6 Medina, No. 10 Avon Lake and No. 15 Lakewood.

The second seed among Division I teams on the west side of the region went to Magnificat, which is in Northeast 6 along with No. 8 Rocky River, No. 9 Wadsworth and No. 11 Strongsville.

The most stacked Division I district is Northeast 4, which has No. 3 Brunswick, No. 4. Midview, No. 5 Highland and No. 7 St. Joseph Academy. Northeast 2 also is strong, with No. 3 Green, No. 4 Hathaway Brown, No. 6. Hoban and No. 7 Stow. Northeast 1 has No. 2 Canton McKinley, No. 5 Walsh Jesuit, No. 9 Riverside and No. 13 Ellet.

DIVISION II

In Division II there are five districts, with Northeast 4 going to the Mansfield Regional and the other four going to the Barberton Regional. Northeast 1 and 2 are from the east side of the region, while the other three are from the west side.

Copley is in Northeast 3 along with No. 6 Canal Fulton Northwest, No. 10 Hawken and No. 11 Tallmadge. St. Vincent-St. Mary, the second seed in the west, is in Northeast 4 with No. 7 Norton, No. 9 Firelands and No. 12 Beaumont. The third seed in the west is Gilmour, which is in Northeast 5 along with No. 4 CVCA, No. 5 Elyria Catholic and No. 8 Woodridge.

The top seed on the east side in Division II is Canfield, which is in Northeast 1 with No. 2 Salem, No. 6 Edgewood and No. 9 Struthers. The top seed in Northeast 2 is No. 3 Alliance Marlington along with No. 4 Chagrin Falls, No. 5 Perry and No. 7 Streetsboro.

DIVISION III

In Division III there are two districts in the east and two in the west, and all four feed into the regional at Cuyahoga Falls. Laurel is in Northeast 1 with No. 4 Columbiana Crestivew, No. 6 Lake Catholic and No. 8 Rootstown. Northeast 2 is headed by No. 2 Garrettsville Garfield followed by No. 3 Poland Seminary, No. 5 Brookfield and No. 7 Villa Angela-St. Joseph.

The top Division III seed on the west side went to Smithville, which is in Northeast 4 with No. 4 Warrensville Heights, No. 7 Loudonville and No. 9 Cuyahoga Heights. Northeast 3 is led by No. 2 Apple Creek Waynedale, No. 3 Doylestown Chippewa, No. 5 Keystone and No. 6 Columbia.

DIVISION IV

Division IV has three districts overall, two in the east and one in the west. District winners will go to the Massillon Perry regional along with a district winner from Northwest Ohio. Richmond Heights is in Northeast 3 along with No. 2 Atwater Waterloo, No. 3 Dalton and No. 4 Canton Central Catholic.

New Middletown Springfield heads Northeast 1 as the top seed, followed by No. 4 Cornerstone, No. 5 Salineville Southern and No. 8 Mineral Ridge. No. 2 Kinsman Badger top Northeast 2 along with No. 3 Berlin Center Western Reserve, No. 6 Southington Chalker and No. 7. Vienna Mathews.

Tournament play begins Feb. 11 for Division I and Feb. 15 for the other three divisions.
